Hi guys.

I was going to set up my parents’ new ATV 4K for them today (They previously had ATV HD) and everything was grand except that it’s not possible to switch to 4K in the settings. The ATV just «jumps» back to the 1080p setting each time.

The tv is 4K (Philips 6000 I believe)
The HDMI cable is a brand new that supports 4K

I‘ve also tried the different HDMI ports. Any suggestions?

Philips 6000 series are 1920x1080P so HD only and not 4K

Thanks for responding Jason. I mixed up the name, the model was 6800.

50 and 60 hz 4K SDR and HDR are showing up as options in the format menu, however, ATV doesn’t want to switch to either one of them. It only directs us back to 1080p SDR.

If you haven't, you could see if there's an update for the both.
might not mean anything but in the audio and video tab can you see enable dolby vision and what happens when you enable it? just curious.

ATV up to date. Could not see the Dolby Vision. Is it possible the tv is too old to support 4K from ATV despite it being a 4K TV?

Edit: Could this issue be related to the ongoing 4K bug with the ATV?

Eliminate layer 1: different hdmi port? If that doesn’t change it, a different HDMI cable? Next if wireless try a wired LAN connection if possible(a network throughput/bandwidth issue)
Also, if possible, try a different TV.

1. Make sure the TV software is up to date.

2. On my TV (Sony) when I plugged in ATV it prompted me to configure the HDMI port (Dolby Vision)

3. On ATV menu run ‘check HDMI connection’. Does this change it?

4. on ATV menu maybe try turning off ‘match content’?

Use original 4k content from ATV+ as your test video. It delivers 4K consistently.

Apple TV bug is wrong info display, DV will be stated as HD, minor. One2Grift stated a different HDMI cable.Yeppers to for that one. There are less expensive cables but I don't mind paying a tad bit more for the Belkin cable for the Apple TV. Because you can't see the DV section, it's cable or TV model, I would guess.

i second buying the Belkin, I did.

Apple for me definitely currently lives up to ‘it just works’. If you’re buying based on this quality, whenever possible stick with that narrow list that was interop tested (Apple often likes to keep the interop list small). Sure, likely any HDMI 4K capable will probably work but if you’re going for the setup, don’t look to save 15$ on this critical item, the HDMI cable (paid 175 ATV, not going to end up chasing a resolution or pixelation ghost to save 10$). Save that money, and more, elsewhere by either buying from the Apple refurb store when possible, or excellent buying patience to get it on sale or when new models approach and getting last model cheaper).
