New Apple TV and streaming mkvs with subtitles

I am thinking about suggesting the new AppleTV to my mom and dad. Can one watch/stream mkvs to AppleTV? And how? This is an really important feature for them.

Not until the jailbreak is available.
Then you can use 3rd party software to stream your MKVs.
