What was the reason Apple omitted optical audio out?

Yeah, it's a bit disappointing to me, as well, but then maybe I'm a marginalised case user.

Like the other person replied, a lot of TVs have their own optical out, but I my favourite use of the TV was to airplay music from iTunes on my computer to my home theatre sound system from 2003 which had multiple optical in ports but no HDMI inputs. Basically I had it set up so that I could not have my TV turned on (i.e. not waste electricity) and still have music play.

TL;DR — A lot of my sh*t is outdated and probably needs replaced.

Yep, am in the same case!
Also I don't have a TV but a projector and it doesn't have optical audio out... Although it would be nice to be able to connect a USB soundcard to the Apple TV through the USB-C port and see if it works, kinda like USB soundcards work on iPads using the camera connection kit's USB adapter.

Have you considered something like this http://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Extrac...442935464&sr=8-1&keywords=hdmi+to+optical+out ? If it works $30 doesn't seem bad.

I really can't wait to get mine. I wish Apple would at least tell us when preorders begin. The new Fire TV is enticing but virtually everything about the Apple TV is better to me.

Well today I am officially a cord cutter. I just cancelled by AT&T UVerse TV service. AT&T wanted to charge me $219 for the package after the 1 year promotion which ended this month. I am going to order (2) ATV 4 and start looking at using Netflix for $8.99/month. I think the timing is good considering the new ATV is being released at the end of October. This will be interesting to see how the new ATV progresses over the next year.

I feel the same way. I think Apple will have great things coming but it will take time for those things to unfold. I am curious how the Xcode 7 allowing anyone to install apps on the new ATV will unfold. Maybe we will see Kodi come to the new ATV using this method.

AC WiFi should enable much smoother AirPlay streaming for those who have newer iPhones and iPads that also feature AC WiFi.

With such a large heatsink, I do have to wonder what the A8 in the Apple TV is clocked at? The iPhone doesn't neat a giant heatsink. Must be significant. I know the iPad Mini 4's A8 chip runs even faster than the 6 Plus, so if I had to guess, this version is probably even faster?

No optical out means my zone2 got harder to feed with audio. Instead of an optical -> analog converter for zone 2, I need an HDMI splitter, an optical extractor, then the optical->analog converter. Bummer.

Does anyone know of a receiver that does optical for zone2? I'm using a Yamaha 7x

No 4K support. Disappointed.

"We've made Apple TV retina even MORE amazing as it supports now 4K...You'll be able to see more crisp detail than ever before /end Tim Cook voice over"....the Apple workshippers goes wild.

Look at post #30 above for a possibility.

Not knowing much about the whole regionalisation of TV, how much of a disadvantage do people in Europe have regarding access to services and shows compared to our American cousins?
Knowing Netflix and similar the difference is going to be huge. Especially within smaller countries. Regionalisation sucks in all levels. :/

I'm excited about this release. It would be nice if I could cut the cable expense, but I'd end up spending appstore money on subscriptions to several different channels.

A nice feature (or an App that will do this at least) would be a way to 'tag' a program you like so that you see when a new episode is available. I like the idea of having content available on demand, but I'm not a binge watcher. I can get used to not thinking of the device as a DVR the way my WMC and TiVo were... but I want to know when a new episode of Game of Thrones has become available, for example.

As of today I am a cord cutter. AT&T was getting too expensive so I did what my budget could afford, cancel the service. I can always go back if I need to. Going to try the cord cutting route for now. I can add HBO Ala cart if I want to.

I cut the cable back in March and I haven't looked back. I was spending $200+ a month on DirecTV for a ton of crap I never watched. I now have Amazon Prime and Netflix and I'm never bored. I just buy season passes for all the shows I like and I'm saving a ton of money.

Optical out is unnecessary at this point. HDMI is fast enough to transfer a full-blown digital audio signal (heck, IIRC it'll transfer two 4K video streams - audio data is relatively slow). No point in running a separate unusual (glass) cable and having to sync separated signals when HDMI can transfer both just fine.

It's a thermal interface.

Thanks. As a follow-up; if that material is a thermal interface, why is it not touching the A8 package itself? Or is the residual adhesive on the board where a heat spreader would land?

Wish everyone would quit complaining about optical out! Two words, people: HDMI. If your TV doesn't have it, you're apparently watching Jeopardy reruns on a black-and-white Zenith tube set ca. 1973. :) HDMI is not new tech.
