I hope Apple continues the ATV line. I imagine they are trailing Roku, and Amazon’s streaming device. What do you want in the next ATV?

Camera/ facetime support, caller ID support, optional sms/email notifications for favorites (contacts). Similar car play abilities (Siri, iHeart Radio, postcast, sms replies).

There have been a few threads on this already.

For me, I would love Apple to be more gaming-focused. Maybe bundle the new ATV with a decent controller.

A partnership with Nintendo would be nice, have a virtual console app on the tvOS.

A D-pad on the remote, and a different design.

A web browser on tvOS.

"Hey Siri"

A smarter Siri

Be able to send texts from the ATV

The ATV3 version of apps available for download on the App Store, but ad Siri support to them.

The way it is now, the ATV4K if a excellent, but overpowered and over-priced (relative to the competition) streaming box. It would be nice if Apple would do more to utilize that power, and not just backpedal on the missteps they took at the tvOS launch that gimped the ATV4. Maybe a partnership with some Devos and bring some popular ports to the tvOS.

Using iTunes with Windows is so horrible, I want to pick up an Apple TV and connect it to my spare HDMI port on my monitor. Will there be any chance there will be a new Apple TV next week with the event?

Thanks

So long as Apple keeps ignoring the game console market, I'm not really sure what significant features a new Apple TV could bring to the table.

Either move Siri off the remote or better integrate Siri across device (ie give TV commands using a HomePod Or AppleWatch).

USB-C support for cameras and other accessories would be great but I don’t see it happening. Group FaceTime on my LG TV would be killer. Kind of possible with the iPad over HDMI or AirPLAY but a native app would be great.

Aside from that, a tweaked A12x with an overclocked GPU and a play at the console market would be great. I’m not a gamer but it would get more money in the ecosystem and that would only be good.

I’m in the same boat. Recently went 4K HDR and I’m loving it but miss my iTunes titles (no not every film is on Movies Everywhere, especially in HDR). I’m holding out until the announcement just on the off chance.

I want AirPlay from tv to HomePod to come out of beta. I want to be able to AirPlay from my iOS device to my tv and have the audio output to HomePod. It’s not essential an essential feature, but it would be nice to have. I didn’t buy my HomePods specifically to be a sound bar replacement. So if we never get this it won’t be a big deal. Other than this there really isn’t anything else I really want. My tv does everything I want. Maybe I’m just not thinking big enough.

Few ideas:

- HomePods as surrounds (either just R/L back channels or 4-channels or even 5-channels)
- "Hey Siri"
- Comcast Xfinity Stream tvOS app (like the Roku app)
- AirPlay (including video) to another Apple TV or 3rd party AirPlay video device
- FaceTime with USB camera or remote iOS device (iPhone/iPad)
- Notifications from iOS devices (with filtering, so you could see phone calls or text messages)

You silly people. I see Facetime, some car play influences such as call/sms/email notifications (favorites only/selected), continuted siri integration to say "siri check messages or siri check voicemail for <my name>".

If you think beyond a TV and think it as a display (of info), ideas form.

None of that requires new hardware. Nice wishlist though.

Edit: well FaceTime will.

Agreed, Facetime and Hey Siri seem like obvious upgrades.

The CarPlay influences only make sense once they make the device truly multi-user. Why would I want my wife and kids to be be able to send sms or email on behalf of me just because it's my Apple account that is associated with the device? As it is the TV app gets cluttered up from things other people are watching because it's a single user device.

That's what they need to add in the next version of tvOS: multi-user support. Each person can have their own home screen, own apps, and connected to their own Apple account. Then you can start adding the personalized user things like SMS, email and Facetime support.

With the introduction of Apple's subscription service, I would not be surprised if Apple also announces a dongle version of the Apple TV for use with the service as a lower cost option to get people in.

But WHY? when everyone has a smartphone that they are glued to? Less is more for tech. Don't over complicate your life. The iPhone does all of that perfectly and is so much more convenient.

Possibly, there’s the opportunity for
  • new A12 processors
  • Increase capacity to 128GB storage
  • Support for the new News service
  • change the color of the ring on the menu button
Nothing new but enough to get the early adopters wallets out of their pockets I’m sure.

  • Upgrade in CPU/RAM
  • Support for pass-through audio
  • Facetime support would be fun
Honestly a CPU upgrade only would mean instabuy for me. I love my AT4K.

I disagree with this, at least for me.

I would much rather use my ATV for stuff if it was possible. Actually, when I am at home I do not use my iPhone that often. I would rather use my Mac for most stuff, including texting. Many times if I know I will be needing to do a lot of texting and I would be home soon, I wait until I get home to text on my Mac rather than text on my iPhone.

When I am on the go, the iPhone is great, but given the choice between the iPhone my iPad, Mac, or ATV while I am at home, I almost always prefer the latter over the iPhone.

I forgot about this in my list. Actually, I would put multi-user support at the top of my list.

For example, the TV app is useless for multiple users, gaming has no way of quickly switching between game center accounts, searching and playing stuff using Siri can screw things up on video apps with multiple accounts.

All I want from a new Apple TV is for Apple to allow Audio Passthrough, the whole world is screaming at Apple for this, but do Apple listen.

I could see this happening with a cheaper, dongle-style version. Especially since pass-through is what will happen 3rd-party TVs and boxes (Roku) start utilizing Airplay...
