Hey guys! I bought a space black Apple Watch. As soon as I got it, I tried turning it on. It didn't, so I plugged it in. The charging screen came on. I tried to turn it on after 10-15 minutes, but it didn't turn on. Googled it. Turns out it takes about an hour for it to turn on after the battery is completely dead, so I left it to charge and went out. Came home after 5 hours. It was STILL charging! The charging screen was constantly on. I tried to turn it on but didn't work. Tried again after 5 minutes, then the Apple logo came up and it turned on and everything worked fine. It asked me to update the software, and it updated, so at that point the battery was more than 50%.

Now my question is, why did it take so long to turn on? I thought it's supposed to turn on automatically after the battery reaches 5%. My old Apple Watch Sport never did this.

Thanks!

See how the battery behaves the next couple of days. If the battery performance isn't good, exchange the Watch. Which series btw?

It's a store return. Series 1. I bought it on eBay from a major retailer. The watch was listed as new (other). It seems to be working fine. It's just that it took so long to turn on.

Normal issue.

That was an series 0 Space Black. It was sitting uncharged for YEARS. I had one that was sitting for just a year and it took a long time as well.

Glad it is working...:)

Lithium Ion Batteries naturally deplete when not in use. If the Apple Watch battery was not charged after so long, it can take longer to charge it to its maximum capacity. In the OP's case, it's was completely depleted.

it also seems to me new devices tend to take a few cycles (about a week or so) to get up to full speed,

Yep I bought a S0 SS with Link Bracelet brand new on eBay, and tried to turn it on as soon as I opened it

Took forever! But it had been in the box for a year and a half so I understood

Thanks guys! I guess it's fine. It's just that I'm used to them turning on automatically after 20 mins. This took 5 hours, and it didn't turn on until I pressed the power button.

Glad it's a common issue.
