"...for every thing we do there’s probably 100 things we don’t do and that’s just part of the design process.”
And this, ladies and gentlemen and everyone else, is why post-Jobs Apple is what it is. Instead of a driving vision, everything is design by committee.
Can you imagine the endless meetings that went on for a year to pick out the final designs?
Given the degree of freedom and status the Design Team have at Apple, I’d say they probably have (for a company of its size) an unusually high – unprecedented, even – level of influence & contribution to a ‘driving vision’ for products.
I imagine that their work, iterating and refining a design, happens both within their team and in close partnership with teams such as engineeeing, marketing and silicon (not with clueless managers in committee-style situations you’re evoking) — that’s how they arrive at a product as well-conceived & thoughtfully developed as Apple Watch.
