In a van down by the river
I just got the Ultra 2 watch yesterday from Apple. I have never had an Apple Watch Ultra before and coming from a a launch day Series 8 45mm, I have to say I have been very happy thus far.

1. I have a 6.5" wrist and I don't think it is too big.

2. I have found the Trail Loop to be even more comfortable than the Sport Loop which has been my go to for many years.

3. I have been wearing the watch non-stop since it was fully charged at 12:00pm eastern time yesterday and the watch hasn't felt heavy on my wrist at any time. I didn't even notice the extra bulk size of the watch while sleeping.

4. I have found that the Ultra Modular face is quick to go to a red screen when low light is perceived but, it can be a few seconds slow returning to normal screen mode.

5. I have been very happy with the battery life thus far although I haven't done a lot of texting, nor have I had any workouts or phone calls with the watch. 27 hrs with 52% battery left is very nice to see. My Series 8 on 94% battery health had been struggling to make it through the day many times without the battery dipping below 30% and a workout didn't even fit into that battery scenario.

6) Although I would have liked to have seen a different color option for the action button, the orange really doesn't bother me.

7) I have found reading and responding to texts, emails and other app text to be much more clear and easier to read. It is a pleasure with the Ultra screen versus the Series watches I have had. Granted, the extra screen real estate between the two models is marginal at best, the flat screen really makes a difference.

8) Siri use for needs not requiring an internet answer have been quick, which is a really nice change from the Series line up.

9) I have yet to test the 3,000 nit screen ability

10) I think the retail price of the Ultra bands is absurd and will look for deals to get a few extra for workout use and possible band accidents.

11) While the haptic feedback engine ability is the same as the Series lineup and I haven't had any problems acknowledging said feedback with the Series or Ultra, I would like to see stronger ability with the Ultra line up with future models.

Barring some kind of hardware problem or watch defect, I plan on keeping the Ultra 2. I already handed down my Series 8 to my brother, who was sporting my Series 7.

If you are someone who uses the Apple Watch a lot and needs better battery life than the Series 8 or 9 can provide, I suggest going to your local Apple Store and trying on the Ultra 2. It very well may be worth the extra upgrade cost.

Welcome to the Ultra club ;)
Don't forget to set your action button...

and I'm sure you know that your can turn that feature off if you so desire ...

You might to grab your brothers series 7 for sleeping, I have an Ultra and eventually found sleeping with it uncomfortable and bought a series 6 just for that. Enjoy your new watch!
I have oura ring, sleeeping with any watch is stupid.

I have Ultra 2 from yesterday, I came from AW7 which I almost did not use. Ultra are better but I just have mindset that it is still the same AW and I do not see added value.
What I like is that alll my previous AW 45 mm starts to be small for me and I was looking for more “manly look”. Everytime when someone had Ultra, it caught my sight. But when I have it, it is just Apple Watch like others.
So I am thinking to return it. But today I sold AW7 for good price so I would have to be without AW and maybe start wearing my mechanical Omega watch.

I can't wait to wear my Ultra2 for sleeping! Looking forward to the long battery life and features for my first big watch. Coming from the 41mm, I'm not 100% that it will be comfortable, but was glad to hear that the OP is having an easy adjustment. I don't have big wrists, but like the look of the Ultra and will pick mine up tomorrow. Can't imagine being without an aw - have enjoyed them for years and wouldn't consider another unless something really groundbreaking replaced it. It's more than a watch to me, more a mini ultra portable computer or smart phone.

I ordered and picked mine up yesterday at my local Apple Store. This is my fourth watch. I had a series 3 GPS,4 LTE, 8 GPS and now the Ultra 2. Went on a 8KM hike today and the new Ultra was great. Much brighter than any of my previous ones. The little bit of extra screen size makes a noticeable difference when using the Work Out Doors app. Next test will be in the water and getting bashed around at work. All my other watches still work but have lots of wear and tear on the glass and finish. Hopefully the Ultra 2 fares a little better.

Edit. After 32 hours I'm at 65% battery. I only had the always on display during my hike. I would say it doesn't feel heavy or bulky like it looks to me,. If Apple make a larger display next year for the Ultra 3 I will be in.

I have kept AOD on with my watch. The only time that isn't the case is during sleep focus.

Wen I first started sleeping with my watch several years ago, it did feel a little odd on the wrist under the pillows the first several days. After that, it has become an extension of me (as it were) and I don't even think about it on the wrist at night, unless I were to get haptic feedback for some reason. Waking up with the watch is one of the best features, in my opinion. No more loud jarring noise to wake you up in the morning, just some haptic taps on the wrist. I think you will really enjoy your Ultra.

Thanks to the OP for your observations, super helpful. Helps me consider further if I want to upgrade from my Series 6 which I like, but, I find the battery life of the "regular" Apple Watches attrocious. While the outdoors-y features of the Ultra would also be useful to me, I mostly just want something that will last for 24 hours without me having to think about my usage so much. If I have a particularly long workout during the day and a lot of notifications, the S6 barely makes it to bedtime which is not ideal.

Even if a person isn't working out every day, receiving and responding to texts and calls, creating reminders, calendar tasks and the like etc. is a lot faster on the watch but, can quickly go through a lot of battery especially if the signal is weak. And Double Tap will make using the watch even easier when one hand is already engaged. I also like the freedom and not having to reach for my phone all the time, as well as being able to leave it at home in many cases.

I upgraded to the U1 from an S6, and had pretty much the same experiences as OP. Now, I have the U2, and I’ll keep it because the trade-in with the U1 halves the cost, but with that, I get a brighter flashlight (which I use somewhat often!), a faster chip, and on-device processing for Siri. The cost-benefit works out for me.

Plus the bigger screen! My eyes aren't young, and any improvement over having to squint at my S6 would be welcome. Really appreciate your practical rundown, it's far more helpful than people just ooing and aahing over the bands or something. I like watch bands too, but first I need to be convinced of the watch. ;)

I’m stupid!
The Oura is interesting, and I don’t wear rings.

I’ve slept with my ultra since launch and a Series 5 before then.
- haptic alarm
- heart rate tracking
- Blood Oxygen
- “flashlight” if needed
- ability to communicate by phone or Messages if desired (my phone isn’t in my bedroom)

‘Stupid’ is the new Ultra Modular watch face not displaying the hours and minutes when colour is set to white!

Thanks for the pros and cons. Unfortunately can’t afford one at the time. I’m stuck with a seven I didn’t want, but love. Got it when my six got water leaking just past warranty expiry 😂 Apple Store in China just laughed and wouldn’t take a trade in

I’m exactly 12 months in to owning my Ultra. Still at 100% battery health. Without workouts and cellular turned off, it easily gets me through 2 and a half days. Even with a 45 mins workout it will still have 68%+ with 14 hours on wrist. So will easily get through 2 full days with workouts. It’s an amazing watch. Congrats on your new Ultra 2 @Apple_Robert

Question for those who bought a AWU2 coming from the AWU1. Have you noticed that the brightness of watch faces in always on mode (or whatever you call the mode that dims after you’re actively viewing it) to be noticeably dimmer than the 1st gen? Trying to see if I’m making this up or if it’s true. If true, it is very irritating.

Thank you Zac. I forgot to mention that I use cellular with my watch, which will affect battery life. I am coming up on 34 hrs since my initial charge and battery is 38% with the new Ultra Modular face. It will be interesting to see how it does with day to day usage as well as long runs.

I do not notice a difference…

I also do not notice a difference in AOD-dimmed mode. But, when it’s active, it IS brighter, if set to full brightness in Settings.
