I agree that it is better to have "My Movies" at the top rather than where it is located in the old menu (since there are now less clicks required to get to your ripped movies). But my understanding of the new menu, from the screen shots I have seen, is that the top half of the screen is taken up by posters from iTunes stuff - rented movies, top movies, etc.
No, it changes via which submenu is selected, so as was said previously if the (now default top submenu) My Movies is chosen it will show the latest synced movies ouf of you're own library.

But my understanding of the new menu, from the screen shots I have seen, is that the top half of the screen is taken up by posters from iTunes stuff - rented movies, top movies, etc. That is the stuff that doesn't matter to me since the main thing I use AppleTv for is my own ripped content. And I still don't like how so much of the main menu screen is essentially blank until you scroll over to reveal the sub-menu choices.

I can't say whether this new setup makes the AppleTV easier overall to find things for most people - all I'm saying is that the look of it doesn't appeal to me. Since the look of the menus is important to me, and the new features in 3.0 are things I am unlikely to use, I will probably stick with the old version. The look of the new menus is surprising to me since I usually really like Apple's choices regarding matters such as these.

Why is it so wrong to not upgrade because I'm not a fan of the new graphics? Like you, I usually like Apple's design decisions and I'm a very visual kind of guy. I usually go for looks before I consider function.

It looks worse than the amount of functions it has, so I'll pass on it.

Of course its not wrong ... its totally you're prerogative. But when you put you're opinion in a forum post, you are only inviting other peoples opinions both agreeing and dissenting. If you didn't want anyones opinion you would not have posted your's in a public forum.

I realize what I did. I just don't see anything wrong with not upgrading software based on looks.

I didn't upgrade to 3.0 on my iPhone because I don't like how it looks.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard because it looks great. Obviously I didn't upgrade simply because of looks alone, but if it looked worse than Leopard, I would have seriously considered not doing the upgrade. Snow Leopard seems like the only thing Apple has really concentrated on lately.

love it

Im sorry but it is far batter on 3.0, i like the fact it displays photos up the top or movie covers, I like that it is easier to move between sub menus (a lot like the XMB on the PS3 now i think of it and sony has been praised for it)

As far as the comments about them loosing design... really??? I think the changes they have made to iLife, FCS3 and SL have been for the better. people tend to like what they feel comfortable with however if you started on 3.0 and the next design was 2.0 i bet you would not like it (not having a go just stating what my opinion is 🙂 )

In terms of aesthetics, the 3.0 menu system is a big change from 2.4. Whenever there is a big aesthetic change some people will like it and some won't.

However, in terms of functionality, the 3.0 system is clearly better for two reasons.

1. Having "My Movies" and "My Music" at the top of the menu tree is exactly as it should be. It always slightly annoyed me that I had to scroll through five or six iTunes store options before I could get to my own content. I thought that was Apple taking their marketing for the iTunes store one step too far.

2. Having immediate access to rented movies, unwatched shows etc from the top of the main menu is fantastic. I have occaisionally been in the situation where I have forgotten about a movie that I rented because I hadn't waded through the menu system to the rented movie section. No chance of that now.

I guess if you are REALLY concerned about the aesthetics then you have the option not to upgrade.

Eventually you will have to though (i.e. when Apple releases an update with new features). I'm sure there were some people who liked the aestheics of the 1.0 menu system better than 2.0, but I doubt there are any people who are doggedly hanging to that version with the new features that 2.0 offered.

In general, I am very happy with the 3.0 update because it means that Apple hasn't forgotten about the ATV. It was only a few weeks ago that people were talking about the demise of the ATV. I'm glad that engineers at apple are still coming up with ideas to improve their product.

I know I'm free to not update... that's why I haven't.

Apple doesn't force me to do anything I don't want to do. I'm still running 2.2.1 on my iPhone.

To tell you the truth... new Apple software hasn't been very good lately in terms of design (with the exception of Snow Leopard... I love it).

I realize that you have different preferences than me, but I couldn't really care less about radio on my TV or that "My Movies" is at the top.

3.0 was hardly an upgrade and since it's mostly just a design upgrade, I think I'll pass.

I don't think you understand the foundation that Apple is laying. Adding support for iTunes Extras and LP was HUGE!!! I have been waiting for that ever since the Apple TV was announced. The future of movies is digital distribution, and Apple is setting up the gateway with open standards!

I like the new menu. There are also lots of little refinements I am noticing. Also, is it just me or did they change the font? 😕

Anyway, the one thing I can't figure out is how to get to faces in the photos. Can anyone tell me how? I have them set up in my iPhoto, but I can't find anyway into them on my Apple TV. Talks about it right here on Apple's site:

http://www.apple.com/appletv/whats-on/photos.html

Also, I love how photos uses events now, but it should retain the same key photos for the events that iPhoto does!

I like it too. I think the top area changing to what area you're in gives it a classy feel, and adds more color.

In regards to the top menu being the only one changed...you think they're just throwing that out for some feedback and then will change the underlying menu's accordingly? The v.2 top menu didn't seem too well received so maybe that's why they changed it again? They do need to change those secondary menus.

I do know when I hacked my 3.0 menu, which I did a restore to my original 1.0 menu first, I was kinda jolted on how primitive the old menu looked compared to the new menu. Plus, I was never a fan of the 2.0 menu anyways so I'm diggin' the new one.

FUGLY - South Parked the **** out of it!

I REGRET UPDATING!!!! Its so fugly!! Flat. No depth. No more glossy selection buttons. Say goodbye to your sleak laser blue Netflix progress bar. Now the Netflix Progress bar has a Y Axis like a graph with bright white tick marks. No more subtle hairline chapter markers. Its like being in a kindergatren art class. They’ve South Parked the **** out of your ATV Experience! LOOKING for a hack and earlier version now!!!!

I won't be upgrading if the menus look like this:

I think I'll stay on 2.x.

Anyone else think the new menus are ugly looking? They don't look like they were designed by Apple. It looks like some amateur Apple enthusiast took the original Apple TV UI, opened it in Photoshop and tried making it look "cool".

I think the 2.x UI is more pleasing to the eye.

Oh, another thing... why did they keep the square corners on the selection boxes if there's no container for them to sit in? The original menus had the nice neat box to fit in... now with 3.0, you have these weird centered menus with a tacky rectangle that selects them.

Yes, the OP had a vision of what the menus would look like in the future once Apple released the 7.0 firmware.🙄
