Hi,
I will receive my new ATV next week and I am trying to figure out a way to have my whole library of media on a external drive on possible a NAS and have the ATV playing out of it.
I have a MAcPro and I don't want to have it as the dedicate Mac to use on with my home theater. The other option I was considering get an used low end MacMini and use with ATV but I wonder if that is necessary or too overkill for my needs.
My library of videos is large. 3TB and Music and Photos another 2TB.
Any help is appreciated.

AirVideo's new app was released today and does exactly this. Just pointed the folder on you NAS or computer and you can see all files ont the ATV. Plays nearly every compression type including mkv and avi.

Can it play files from a NAS independently of a PC or Mac...?

I don't have my Apple TV yet (it comes Monday), but I think Infuse is the app you would be looking for. I don't know if it's available yet, but I know they were working on it. It will play any video file from any network set up (including NAS, I believe). You can look at the iPhone or iPad version of it to see what it does if the Apple TV version isn't ready yet.

Edit: Here's the link to their site: http://firecore.com/infuse

What you need is a Synology with plex loaded on it. Then you can use the Simplex app. That should work. Or wait for the official Plex or Firecore apps.

Cool, once this is confirmed I will buy a Synology NAS. Hopefully Plex will have this capability.
