Really nice. Obviates the need for Audirvana for some of us.

This seems similar to the BitPerfect app from years ago that integrated with iTunes. I think the developer eventually gave up trying to maintain it because of iTunes' sporadic and poorly-documented modifications which prevented handoff of the actual audio-playing functionality to a 3rd-party app. The biggest drawback was gapless playback because of inconsistencies with how iTunes 'told it' what song was coming next.

I tried to download it but my Mac refused to open it, as apparently it couldn't confirm that it wasn't malware...

You probably need to lower your security settings. I remember running into this when I first tried to install Audacity.

Why dont just do as the BitPurfect states on the page

Download the .dmg from Releases, drag BitPurfect to Applications, and launch it.

Builds here are signed with an anonymous (ad-hoc) signature, not notarized, so macOS will block the first launch. To allow it:

Double-click the app. macOS refuses to open it.
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the message about BitPurfect, and click Open Anyway.
Confirm.”
