poor souls, little do they know how much it sucks... the limitations are pathetic but I guess we came to expect that from Apple

I read many people comparing it to the lousy manufacturer's entertainment system. People desperate for something better will take anything. What the article doesn't really come out and say is that Android Auto surpasses CarPlay in the US (and barely in Europe), if I counted the percentages correctly.

CarPlay is just OK. It's not great. I wish it was graphically richer. I still use Google Maps from my phone while connected and the voice navigation comes across the system just fine. Something like PLEX, but for cars, would be awesome!

Its surprising to me that the US is the country with more interest from Android Auto, which is the country that has the largest share of iOS vs. Android. I've not had the opportunity to use them both for a period of time and while I do like them both, I am preferring Android Auto. Google Assistant is more reliable for me than Siri, and well the trump card is Waze.

Why do car companies think they can do user facing software? They are usually about as talented at software as the companies that make set top boxes for Comcast.

It has third party app integration. More developers need to develop for it.

Yes, but through Siri and voice calling (that is good) but do you mean that for instance, WhatsApp could have an app at the home screen if they wanted to develop it? Or what about Waze?, no apps were added to my car home screen in the last 2 major iOS updates.. its hard to believe that it is just a developers low interest matter

This is contrived because if the Car doesn't offer both I'm not buying it, and MOST cars these days offer both.

To say people are interested in Car Play more then Android Auto is vapid because both are usually included in any car that matters.

And by getting Such a car getting even more bound to Apple ecosystem

Most of the systems support both CarPlay and Android Auto, so not sure how it would make you more bound. My Pioneer head unit does, and I just switched from iOS to Android. A simple matter of plugging in the different phone.

This kind of distraction has killed soo many people and should be forbidden.
Just as bad people texting while driving.
Nobody's comfort, time, entertainment needs go before safety.
(Aoohps sorry, commercial interests...)

Really, how exactly is this just as bad as texting while driving? If I want to text, I have to look away from the phone and type and read messages and then type replies. With CarPlay or Android Auto, it reads the messages to me, and I tell it what I want to send back as a reply. Its no more distracting than talking to someone in the car. Are you suggesting that all cars by single occupancy with no audio ability at all? My guess would be the deaths from people falling asleep would be similar to distractions from CarPlay or Android Auto.

Factory audio has not been a concern for me in past vehicles.

Being that I'm embedded in the Apple ecosystem, it made sense for me to find a CarPlay capable audio system.

I got an aftermarket stereo system to replace the crap uConnect setup in my Jeep.

What a difference> Pioneer, CarPlay / Android Auto with GPS, Bluetooth and a good interface.

I have been using CarPlay with out any issues for a few months. I use Siri for text, navigations with Maps. In my area, Maps works as well as Google with the exception of POI's.

Until iOS 11, I hadn't had any issues. However, after updating - I sometimes have to reconnect my 7+ in order to use the interface. I'm sure it's an issue with the iOS. Lots of other threads on this. It's just a minor annoyance at the moment.
I'm sure it will get resolved.

Like, how come when I plug it in, my entire iPhone screen gets covered with the CarPlay logo for about 10 seconds? Huge nuisance when I want to put on nav or music. That has to be Apple, right?

That's a launch screen that's basically telling you "I'm connecting to your car, and I'm not ready yet." There obviously needs to be some kind of notification that CarPlay is connecting, but whether it takes 10 seconds or 1 second depends on the hardware in your car.

I really wish my new Mazda 3 had CarPlay. At the end of the day, the driving experience won out over an entertainment system feature like CarPlay/AndroidAuto, since I've lived without CarPlay for the past 10 years. However, my decision would have been made much easier since this is a feature that I value highly.

Any car that matters to whom? Maybe you. Fair enough. To me, nope. The only make that really matters to me is BMW because it's inevitably what I always buy after my cursory look at other makes models. But I also think it's fair to say BMW is brand that has an impact in the automobile industry. It's no wall flower brand.

BMW doesn't offer Android Auto. It does offer CarPlay. Not terribly interested in CarPlay but 100% not interested in Android Auto. The unavailability of either isn't a deal breaker for me or any other Bimmer owner.

This is "People THINK they want something until they really try it out."

It's hot garbage. Either that, or their original car infotainment is super-trash!

I try and try and try to use it but it's so... useless. Just don't need it in a car. Mercedes has all that is necessary covered.

Same, but I've only tried one car (Chevy Suburban). I've found it worse than useless. Literally would rather use the 1/8" aux input.

I literally DO use the input jack te
Count me as another Toyota / Lexus fan that is seriously interested in CarPlay. It MIGHT be enough to make me jump ship as someone that has owned at least 5 Toyotas and 6 Lexus vehicles.

When you finally stop drinking the Toyota CoolAid you'll be astonished at how bad Toyota's electric steering assist really is, including the newest Lexi. Even cheap beaten Hyundai rental has better steering control, weighting and feedback.

I just got off the Toyota train. I gave them far too much loyalty, and money.

My next or new car is an Uber ;)

Ride sharing or subscription with autonomous vehicles is a bigger threat to personal vehicle ownership.

Lol you live in the Northwest right?

We tried it in my wife's Chevy Cruz hatchback for 1 day and then went to the embedded GPS that came with the car, along with bluetooth audio from the phone. Much better combination. Carplay is horrendous.

Perfect. Thanks for letting me know.

I'd need to try CarPlay in order to make a definitive decision, but I'm definitely interested. My 2016 Nissan Rogue has Bluetooth audio where I stream Apple Music from. I also have SiriusXM in the car. While Bluetooth audio is a must have feature for me, I'm sure having a care with Apple CarPlay would make for a more seamless experience.

Come on Mazda, I'm looking at you. I'm not buying another vehicle until you have Car Play

How exactly is a connected navigation system that can respond to current conditions "horrendous" in comparison to a disconnected and probably out of date system? I've never seen an embedded navigation system that worked well personally.

I generally plan where I'm going on my phone before I even get in the car, connect Carplay, and its already going when I start driving.

For the times I've been in rentals that had CarPlay, it was convenient compared to having to pair via BT, but I wouldn't say it was some game changer. A couple of times, the thing I didn't like about CarPlay was that the system was difficult to switch out of CarPlay and into the car's main interface. I'm one of those people who actually like listening to the radio - especially when I'm in a new town / region, so I don't just want to be connected to iTunes or XM and like being able to easily move between screens without having to figure out what buttons to push.

Pro-tip: Don't buy a car with the vague promise of a dealership or the hints from the corporate technology line that the car that you are considering buying will receive a firmware to enable CarPlay.

How do I know? It happened to my sister when she bought her new 2016 Honda Fit.

Heh, same experience buying a '17 Mazda3. CarPlay was not a deciding factor obviously, since Mazda hasn't released it yet, but I bought the car in May and the sales guy said that, in October, We'd be getting a letter from Mazda explaining we could bring it in to get CarPlay deployed. Mazda in fact sent a press release out a year or so ago saying they'd be supporting it retroactively on many models, so I figured I'd be good. Well, October is half over, and still no word from Mazda...

The current Mazda Infotainface isn't terrible...it does pretty much everything I would want anyways, including speaking text messages, via Bluetooth. Between that and "Hey Siri" I'm not missing much in terms of functionality. On the other hand I actually LOCKED UP the radio interface twice in the past week, and as far as I could tell the only way to get it to work again was to pull over, shut the car off, and turn it on again. Geez, we've reached a point in technology where we can now crash the car radio.

All that being said, it would be nice if Mazda made good on their promise.

Wrong mindset. It is distracting, just like shaving, reading long billboard text, comforting the pet, getting bread out of a box. And it has unexpected results (especially with Siri in its current state)

I almost didn't buy my Lexus RX 350 cuz it didn't have CarPlay. Stupid Toyota! I'm still kinda miffed about it.

If I bought cars more often than I do I think it'd be a factor for any car that wasn't BMW but I keep cars for to long to worry over AP/AA
