Whether or not the insurance company can (or even should have to) prove the breakage occurred after the insurance was purchased is totally beside the point.

It's morally wrong... and against the law. One buys insurance before any damage occurs to help offset the cost or impact of said damage. Buying it after there's damage (and only if there's damage) is wrong, illegal, and drives up the cost for the law-abiding members of society. Spinning it to justify the fraud doesn't make it right.

This, in a nutshell, is a prime example of what's wrong with society.
So it's ok for insurance companies to charge us whatever they want every month for our cars? because it's a law. I don't personally have insurance on my phone and I'll just pay out of pocket to replace mine if it gets broke. But I honestly don't care if people rips insurance companies off like they do to the rest of us every 30 days.

At the risk of taking this thread into the weeds... when you get a quote for insurance, you have the option of agreeing to pay the requested premium, go elsewhere or simply choose not to insure. Whether or not insurance premiums are "fair" in your eyes is moot. Either you buy it or your don't - your choice. As far as the price goes, the insurance companies set the premiums and consumers choose to buy or not based on a number of factors, including the cost of the premiums. In general terms, no one is forced to buy insurance, and if the consumer chooses to make a purchase, they are free to purchase it from any given company.

This is completely different. The OP had already experienced the "loss", and you are suggesting that he just cheat the insurance company by adding insurance after the fact.

With that, I'm done here... no time for arguing with amoral suborners of insurance fraud.

The requirement that you purchase insurance on your car protects me from you, not you from yourself. I couldn't care less whether some jackass's insurance will repair his car / pay his medical bills or not, and neither does the law. It protects *the other side* from the jackass.

So no, the examples aren't at all parallel.

Insurance companies do not charge just what ever they want. They have to compete with other insurance companies. When you look at the amount of risk or exposure to risk, insurance is a bargain.

That's your opinion on it being a bargain. Just my woman's grandpa. He is 70 years old and has never even been in a wreck. Not once. Imagine all the $$$ they made off of him over the years.

Life is so unfair.

How would you feel if someone rear ended you and paralyzed you for the rest of your life and they had no insurance. You would be responsible for taking care of yourself the rest of your life.

So they made money off his policy.

So it's OK then if a different policyholder pulls a stunt and commits fraud?

Two wrongs don't make a right.

It's funny. Lots of people go in to business to make money. Lots of people think business is great because if you work hard you too can become part of the American success story.

Business is great. You can make a lot of money. We write laws to promote business and make it easier to make money.

But insurance companies, which are businesses?

Nah, those are evil. They can't make money They are parasites and prey on people. They aren't worthy because all they do is rip people off.

Never mind the kinds of businesses people go all gaga for rip people off all the time. But those are okay.

If everyone felt entitled to rip off insurance companies at will there eventually would be no funds out anybody. left to pay
