The highlight of the sale is the 27-inch ViewFinity S9 5K Smart Monitor for $899.99, down from $1,599.99. At $700 off this a new all-time low price on the 2023 display, which has a matte display, modular 4K SlimFit camera, and support for Thunderbolt 4.

Samsung's 27-inch Smart Monitor M8 is also being discounted during this sale, available for $349.99 in Sunset Pink, down from $699.99. Other colors, like Warm White, are priced at $399.99. This is a 4K smart monitor with a design that looks similar to the new iMac line, and it's at another new record low price during Samsung's Spring Sale.

$899.99 may be a decent price for this monitor. $1599.99 is ridiculous. However, this is how Samsung monitors are usually priced and sold.

What I don't like though is how macOS doesn't usually offer the 2304xXXXX scaled resolution option for 5K monitors. I much prefer that over the 2X scaled 2560xXXXX resolution in the 27" size, because of default text and OS element sizing. 5K 2560x1440 would be awesome on a 5K 29" monitor (203 ppi) though.

$899.99 may be an all-time low for samsung.com but this monitor has been cheaper elsewhere (Amazon was $831 on 12/29/23). Samsung EDD/EPP frequently has it for less than $899.

It'd be great if Samsung did these deals outside of their US store. This monitor is still full price (£1271 on the UK site). If Samsung had it for £715 (the same proportional discount as in this advert) then I'd buy one right now, probably more than one as we could do with some new monitors for a few people in the office. But I'm not paying the 'full price' when I know Samsung are selling it for almost half price regularly in other markets.

The whole point of owning a 5k monitor is to not have scaled resolutions

Yes, 2X non-scaled is best, which is why I'd prefer 5K "looks like" 2560x1440 at 29-30".

However, at the 27" size, I'd prefer "looks like" 2304x1296 over 2560x1440, and I say that as someone who owns a 27" 5K iMac. I'm currently running a 4K+ 3840x2560 3:2 28.2" monitor (same pixel density as 4K 27") at 2304x1536. Looks pretty good actually at normal seating distances. 4K 27" is considered "Retina" at a 21" seating distance. I sit at 22" to 25".

lol, I mean we laughed our asses off the last time they offered such a steep discount but now I'm starting to feel really bad for the people who bought it for the initial price.
I wonder who bought it at that price, because even at launch IIRC it was available for under MSRP.

"ViewFinity S9 5K Smart Monitor for $899.99, down from $1,599.99. At $700 off this a new all-time low price on the 2023 display"
The all-time low on Amazon was about $810 in December 2023.

Why are we complaining about sales?
I wish Apple products were on sales of this scale and frequency!

Love it!
apple products are on sale pretty much always on amazon for the last year or more. Maybe not this deep but the ASD is at least 1299 and it’s the higher quality product

I go the opposite direction and set my 27-inch iMac 5K to one tick “more space” than 2×, for an effective resolution of 2880 × 1620. The scaling doesn’t bother my 48-year-old eyes, though I suppose it’d be a little more crisp if the physical display was 5760 × 3240.

Anyway, I assume if you plug in this Samsung to a newer Mac, you get some called options, right? The one that EugW prefers isn’t available on my iMac, but there are 2 options on either side of the true 2× default.

Hey guys
So I'm on the market for a 5K monitor mostly for photo editing. Q, which option do you guys think is best, the Viewfinity S9 or LG Ultrafine? Thanks in advance.

The MR headline is grossly misleading and sensationalized.

On Amazon 1599.99 is the highest it’s ever been (about six months ago) and was just $831 two months ago.

point here is, it looks like nobody wants them anyway

I’d buy a 5k monitor if it was a 32”

I end up having to use scaling as I find the default point sizes Apple has blessed as “correct” for retina at various screen sizes to be too small as I’ve gotten older.

On a 15” class laptop for instance I still run and prefer 1440x900 (or equivalent if on a NotchBook)

On a 32” monitor I prefer 2560x1440-ish, but could always enjoy more pixels than 4k/32” provides

Has anyone ever confirmed who makes the panels for this monitor? Is Samsung making these or do they buy them from LG Display(for example Samsung does buy panels from LG Display in some cases like WOLED panels for some of their cheaper OLED tvs).

I wonder if these are coming from LG Display and the higher graded panels during QA get allocated to Apple(paying more money) while rest go to Samsung and LG Electronics for their 5K display....LG Electronics operates separately from LG Display and they buy the panels from LG Display

My holy grail size for 5K 16:9 is in the 29-30" range, although I'd take a 32" too.

27" 5K = 218 ppi, Retina at 15.80"
29" 5K = 203 ppi, Retina at 16.97"
30" 5K = 196 ppi, Retina at 17.56"
32" 5K = 184 ppi, Retina at 18.73"

Ergonomic guidelines recommend a minimum 20" seating distance for a desktop monitor, so all of these meet that criteria for Retina.

Agreed.

I'm also on the «5K at 200% on 27″ is just too much» crowd. I have close to 20-20 vision when wearing glasses, but everything is still too tiny, very unpleasing for the eyes and neck (because you push your head forward all the time).

It should be 27" 4K, 32" 5K, 36" 6K.

I wish macOS had actually working fractional scaling, so you could be able to use 175% or 150% with no quality loss, but I've lost hope at this point. Scaling works so much better on Windows :(
