Alongside the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus, Apple today debuted four new docks that are compatible with the new iPhones and the existing iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The docks come in colors that match the finish of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus and are available in Gold, Rose Gold, Space Gray, and Silver. The docks are available for purchase immediately from Apple's online storefront and are priced at $49.99.

Apple is also launching new leather and silicone cases for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, which are available in new colors. The leather colors include Midnight Blue, Saddle Brown, Rose Gray, Brown, and Black.

In silicone, customers will be able to choose from White, Charcoal Gray, Stone, Antique White, Blue, Turquoise, Midnight Blue, Lavender, Pink, Orange, and Red. Many of the colors match the newly announced Apple Watch band line-up as well.

I really like the space gray dock, but just like with the iPhone 6 dock, I'm worried about putting all the pressure on just the lightening port. There is no back support...Perhaps I'm just being paranoid.

The good news is Apple's after sales is second to none, so if it does break under normal use I'm sure Apple will support you.

Sorry, grammar pedant time:

It's "lightning" - like the phenomena associated with thunder. "lightening" is a verb meaning "to lighten" - like increasing the brightness of a photo, or to remove weight.

I'm sure they would have thought of that when designing it surely. Maybe the connector bit pivots a bit to alleviate pressure?

That's really not an issue...

I bought a dock with my first iPhone. Really liked it. But then the form factor changed in the next iPhone I bought, and the dock became useless. As much as I like Apple's docks, I can't justify buying one alongside every new iPhone I buy, even if that's just every 2-3 years now. They need to offer a trade-in program on docks.

I assume the older cases will work with the 6s and 6s Plus due to the phones almost being the same sizes? I'm generally fond of the red leather case which looks to have been dropped in place of the red silicone. If I can I'll just use an older case.

Just like they do with their power supply cords? phone cords?
Wait, you're being sarcastic? Or will an Apple store replace a cord for me? Cause I've had lightning cables wear out under what I'd consider pretty normal use. I never bothered trying to take it in.

I've brought a lighting cable in and it was replaced for free. I brought in a MBP power supply who's cord had obvious cat bite on it (not mine previous owner of MBP) and they replaced it for free.

Have you looked at the picture?

Apparently not.
I get what you're implying. How could that design ever conceivably become obsolete? It's just a flat brick with a lightning pin nub sticking out!

Well, they might abandon lightning in favor of Lightning 2 or even wireless charging. They might move its location on the phone to be off center or another side so it wouldn't balance. They might make the phone bigger and thus too stressful to rest on just the pin (says it doesn't support iPad, presumably just too big). They might change the contours of the phone edges or connector inset in such a way that it can no longer sit on that nub properly. They might change the phone colors to Galactic Gray, Perfect Platinum, Glamorous Gold, and Radiant Rose so that they're no longer matching (guess white at least is the option against that) - aren't we on our second or third "gray" right now? They could add some kind of cool new feature like rapid charging that for some reason can't pass through this dock, or a signal booster built into a new dock so that this one is lame.

I don't know how likely any of those are. But we're on our fourth generation of lightning devices. It feels like it's about time for them to change next year because I finally have a sufficient collection of cables again. And it was just when I had a lot of previous connector cables collected that they released lightning, making them all useless.

I would love to have it but not for $49.00. Are they nuts?
I agree. You can still buy the plain white plastic Lightning Dock for $39. Seems to me they should have dropped the white plastic dock to $29, and introduced the new aluminum clad for the same $39 price as the old one.

The only justification I'm contemplating is that this is actually milled from a solid block of aluminum giving the dock some much needed weight, and the only plastic parts is the lightning connector housing.

The 30-pin design lasted for what, 10 years?
Oh Yeah? Guess just my perspective then. My first 30 pin device was an iPhone (the original Edge). Its dock didn't fit my later 3GS (due to the shape of the phone) so I bought another dock. And then I had a 4S, which was a block shape and again didn't fit; didn't ever get a new dock though. Then I got and still have a 5C. I got 3 generations out of the 30 pin, about 5-6 years (spouse got the 5 the year before I got a 5C, so we'd already started collecting lightning). So by the time the iPhone 7 comes out, we'll have been on lightning 4 years? I suppose you're right. There's a good chance it's got at least 2 years left, if not several more.
