I don't. It would definitely hurt sales of the devices. I think it should remain one iPad for each family member.
Not sure if serious. What would it matter to you specifically if it hurt device sales? I don't mean that in a derogatory manner. Genuinely curious. Please don' say "cuz stockholder". There hasn't been a corollary between Apple performance and AAPL performance for a long time.

About time. As someone pushing my kid's (public) school to unify their technology plan, this may make the difference between keeping iPads in the school vs. downgrading to something else. Yes, storage will be an issue. Yes, Apple is late to the game. But the students and teachers both prefer iPads to other tablets, and this might make it economically feasible.

Nice on the management side of the house. I would suspect that user accounts will be coming to iOS 10. I don't think user accounts would hurt sales of iPads. But easily moving from one device to the next and logging on to have your data move with you would enhance the overall eco system tremendously.

Hm. You might be right. Apple does go through the effort of making versions of OS X which are exclusive to schools (weird that MacRumors never mentions those. I remember that I checked the build that was on my school laptop one time in About this Mac and it said something about it being an education exclusive version that was not to be updated to the standard version.)

I can imagine them making a special education only version of iOS, as well.

Only problem with that theory is that Apple is sending out betas of iOS including that app to all beta participants, not education only beta participants.
Source? I've never seen a version of Mac OS X that was made for schools only. That's complete news to me.

I'm not sure what the net sales would be. I could see some people/organizations buy fewer, in the "Why buy 10 iPads when we can buy 5 & share?" However, some others might have held off on buying iPads since they couldn't buy enough for everyone and didn't want individual's data to be shared.

I do have a question about the managed accounts: what happens if someone at the school already has an AppleID using their school e-mail? Can the district start managing it, or will it be stupid and say "Can't create managed AppleID. Account with that ID already exists"?

Hey Apple - Features aren't going to get these in classrooms, it's the COST that matters. Chromebooks are winning this race, over the past three years, Apple's market share been slashed by more than half, from 52 to 24 percent and Microsoft's market share has slipped from 43 to 24 percent while Googles inexpensive Chromebook now makes up more than half of all the computing purchases by schools. Get the prices down to reasonable levels and maybe you can get back some market share.

The Apple id function would be ideal. additionally being able to combine apple ids and delete all unnecessary ones.
It seems like theyre trying to leverage an Apple ID like an Active Directory/Open Directory account...this would be awesome across iOS and OS X....hell even the AppleTV.

I know Casper has done this stuff for iOS/iPad for sometime, kind of easier it seems

"Shared iPad"? that sounds like the killer feature I've been waiting for - multiple users on a single iPad!

Yeah, and I'm not sure why they seem to be only targeting it toward students. It should be for families, as well. Hopefully that's just semantics and there's nothing preventing families from using the feature too.

Apple also needs to "borrow" an idea from the Kindle and implement something like Free Time on Kindle that allows kids to play games after so many minutes of being in an educational app. That feature was pure genius on Amazon's part.

Yes, because Windows or Android come with all those features bundled in!

And with free management software, like Apple is offering!
I think the poster's comment had more to do with the fact that Apple seems to have ceded the education market to Google. Bringing a feature, years later, that should have been a no-brainer from the onset is one of the reasons Google took hold of the education market.

Mentioning Windows and Android is simply deflection since no one claimed either had those features.

Some great improvements. It's almost as if Apple actually talked to the teachers and administrators running these programs. Imagine that? Sign of good things to come.

That's one way to look at it. The other way to look at it is they saw Chromebooks eating their lunch in the education market due to superior device management tools so they had to respond. And good for Apple.

So iPads from now on will have this Classrooms app as an app that can't be removed and has to go into a hidden folder?

It seems like there's no way the Classrooms app would work as an app store download... it sounds pretty heavily integrated into the OS to me.

Apple doesnt need to stop carriers installing bloatware on their devices. They have a load of bloatware all of their own making.

As an educator I really welcome these new apps. Locking all apps is ideal to keep everyone on track and having a way to monitor everyones screen is great to see who is making progress and those who are slacking.

Right now my school uses notebooks during the "catalyst" period or for when using "AR" for taking book exams. I cant recall how many times I have caught students looking at youtube and what not. I suppose the IT department needs to do a better job to block access to anything else other than school related apps/sites.

We need to lobby for ipads

How many of the comments will be in regards to "Shared iPad" and comparing it to the oft-requested feature of having user profiles on the iOS devices so families can share a device and still have each user's experience customized?

I'd also like to Lock certain apps on my employees iPads, lol.

Probably most of them; this now looks nailed-on for iOS 10.

I mean, Apple are obviously aware that people want that feature. If another major software update went by without it, when such a similar system exists for school use, people would be upset. Every piece of commentary about iOS 10 would mention that hole.

Certainly it would make more sense than ever, given that it would benefit not just the iPad, but now also the iPad Pro.

Steve Jobs would have had features like this implemented YEARS ago.

Steve Jobs is still dead and he won't be coming back.

I wish he was still around, so many useless people die very very old; but Steve's gone and Apple will not be the same. Nothing you can do about it.
