Considering that this will be used, a lot, by K-12 students, is it really wise to have AI built into a device that is being used for learning. As a HS teacher, games are a big enough distraction already. Do we need to walk around to make sure that AI is not solving their math problems and writing their essays?
Parents could have the option to disable such features if Apple really wanted to provide it. It would be a simple OS level switch,

I knee-jerked and bought it this morning not even imagining it wouldn’t support AppleAI. I cancelled when I realized it wasn’t much of an upgrade from my 10.

However after more careful thought I traded in my old 10 and for $170 net it’s a solid deal for double the storage. And the trade-in value of a 10 will be much, much less for eventual trade-in to an AI-capable low-cost version down the line. Much better to have an 11 to trade for the 12 with may have AI.
If you’re not using Apple Intelligence it will probably be fine. Everyone’s use case is different.

A16/6GB is the right spec for this price point. A solid upgrade over the 10.

The market for these is people who just want a basic tablet. Most of them were happy buying the 9th gen last year despite it dating to 2021. This is a significantly better experience.
Correct. I'm entirely content with my 9th gen. If it dies while the 11th is out I can replace it without getting Augmented Idiocy foisted on me. I will have to get a headphone adapter though.

I have real computers for actual work including this Air now AI free on Sonoma for at another year.

Great to see more RAM. Even without Apple Intelligence, more RAM is very beneficial. Should prevent reloading of Safari tabs.

You misspelled "Fortunately".

I repeat: leaving Apple intelligence off of this iPad is a bone headed mood. Not that it’s any good right now but it may be in say a year from now. You then spent $350+ on a device that is hobbled from the start. Pure cash grab. The fragmentation is getting a bit much in my extremely humble opinion.
That's probably what Tim Crook wants. The sooner a device is obsolete, the sooner its owners will buy new devices.

I guess my M4 iPad Pro and 24 GB M4 Mac mini are both already hobbled, since I’ve turned off Apple Intelligence on both of those and will leave AI off on those for the foreseeable future.

At this point, the iPad fragmentation exceeds Android universe LOL. What was Apple thinking with that many iPad lineups with that many variations and absence of so many features? Must be a nightmare for iPadOS team to prepare update package for each iPads.

You’re not alone. I have Apple Intelligence turned off on my M3 iMac, M2 iPad Air 13 and iPhone 14. I don’t feel I’m missing a damned thing.

On my car I have lane-keeping assist and auto stop/start turned off as well and never use the configurable digital instrument cluster. I use the infotainment screen only for music as it pairs with my iPod Touch. I never use it for phone calls as I don’t look at my phone while I’m driving—it’s in my pocket out of easy reach.

True. The district I work in provides an iPad, currently iPad 10, to EVERY student in the district. I suppose the district could turn it off. But students can often find a way around it. IMO, Apple Intelligence is not needed for this device.

Just to play satan's lawyer, I couldn't care less about no Apple Intelligence, because I turn it off on every device I've got so far. I don't view it as "hobbled". So I'm sure I'm not alone.

I bet “text AI” will work just fine. Even if it wont, — no one cares at this point. Hype is gone.

The lack of the AI reminds me if the 2016 iPad Pro (which I owned). It cane with 2GB from RAM, a step down from the previous model, and a step down from the previous model. I regretted buyng it for that reason.

Speaking of RAM, aside from AI, this is actually a nice 50% upgrade.

i wonder if someone has done the analysis on how much RAM Apple Intelligence takes up on idle. Meaning, if Apple intelligence while idle takes up 2gb constantly, then longevity and performance of this iPad should be on par.

It’s zero GB if you turn off Apple Intelligence.

Yeah I also think it is a failed vision and further segmentation, but now we know the future of the upcoming homepod mini…

How do you want a smarter Siri to work? Apples answer will be the release in 2027 and by that time, a new purchase is already justified.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Apple Intelligence doesn't really do much. This is great for people who just want a solid tablet experience. This is a great chip and a solid amount of memory for a tablet for most users, at a good price.

I currently have an iPad 9th gen, and while it still handles most tasks well, it does feel a bit sluggish at times. If I were to upgrade, do you think it would be worth spending a bit more for the iPad Air M1, or should I go with this one? Alternatively, would the iPad 10th gen, which is currently selling for $319 where I live, be a good option still?

For a $30 price difference you're better off getting the 11th gen over the 10th.
The 10th gen is only 1 year newer than the 9th; whereas the 11th is 4 years newer.

As for the 11th gen vs the air, the air is a lot better, even the last gen, but it's a lot more money. So comes down to what you want to spend.
