I did quite a bit of reading and have been making some progress.
I picked up the Akitio Neutrino Thunder Duo and installed two Samsung 840 Evo 500 GB SSDs. I am using software raid 0 and am getting what I consider to be impressive numbers.
I had the disk about 1/3 full with files that I use regularly before I ran the first test. My Write speed was around 680-700 and my read speed was north of 780-790. I just thought I would share in case anyone else is looking for a small External drive.
Of course, I have time capsule and other large external HDD for long term storage and redundancy.
