I'm a current AT&T and iPhone 3g user. My contract is expired and I am eligible to upgrade to the new iPhone 4. My friend and I would like to start a family plan together and both get iPhone 4's.

Would I still be able to get my $30/month unlimited data if we start a new family plan? Or would I now be reverted to AT&T new data plan?

If you are continuing your account and tacking on a new 2 year service agreement, you will be able to continue using the unlimited data plan. If you are scrapping your current contract and signing up fresh with AT&T, you'll have to go for one of the new data plans.

I suggest that you upgrade to the iPhone 4 on your account and add your friend as the family plan account.

You could just add your friend to your account if he doesn't care for the unlimited. Otherwise you'd probably should call AT&T and check.

That makes sense, thanks for the help guys.

So if my friend is is added to my account with a new iPhone 4, how will the data plan work? Im an existing iPhone user and he will be a new iPhone user under the same Family Plan.

I'm getting some questions out of the way before I find time to visit AT&T.

Also, just an FYI. You might already know or realize this but the data plans are independent for each phone on family plans. So you share the minutes, text plan, etc, but data is individual for each phone.

family data plan

not unlimited data, but this was good news...

i just added a 5th line AT/T family plan (3 blackberrys & 2 iphones)
data was $15/month/line (for 200MB each...this would total 1GB for $75)
- changed to new family data plan - $25/month shared (2GB total)

- happy with this - paying 1/3 price of previous plan & getting twice the data...but data is data, so this makes sense

That is a better deal! However, keeping track of the data usage could be problematic. Though, after awhile, you may see a pattern and that would allow heavier users to use more.
