Any way to generate a tag cloud from vBulletin?

Click on the "Tags" title at the bottom of any thread page, and you'll be taken here. Not entirely intuitive...you have to notice it's a link and click it to see where it leads.

Fight the good fight. I'm going to have a beer. ;)

I'm not sure how eventually useful the feature might become, but it's worth keeping, I guess. Any way to generate a tag cloud from vBulletin? And if so, would it be worth making that a feature somewhere?

There is a tag cloud already here if that is what you are after?

You can also get to it from the Search option at the top then "Tag search"

Cheers. It is a little hidden away, though. A nice-looking tag cloud could work well on the front page, even, since it has a partial form of a blog. </blue skies>

Anyway, I'll leave it there. I'm sure you're all on the case. :)

I guess I just don't see any possible advantage to these tags which makes them worth the bother.

Well, clicking on the "announcement" tag on this thread quickly takes you to a bunch of other forum announcements...that seems like it could be useful at times.

On a broader scale, it requires that enough users be using them and with enough specificity that you'd be able to quickly get to a list of similar threads. It'll take awhile, but we'll continue to evaluate it.

Isn't there a simpler way to highlight announcements without invoking the whole "tags" fustercluck?

There are options like stickied threads and forum-specific or site-wide "announcements" that appear at the top of forum pages, but I was just using that as an example of how it might be useful to be able to find related threads on any number of topics.

But again, it's all predicated on tags being used correctly. As we close the holes that have been allowing misuse and more people use the tags properly on their threads over time, the hope is that they in fact will be useful. But we won't know for sure until we let things play out a bit.

A tag cloud somewhere on the homepage would be helpful. Also if you click on the Tag link, you should be able to get more than the top 70 results. 70's a good number for the homepage, though.

One problem with the thread starter being the only person adding the tags is that they're usually asking the questions and may not know enough to properly tag the thread. Those who answer a question are more likely to add the proper tags. Not sure how you get there without some sort of rep system, which nobody seems to want, or an open system, which nobody seems grown up enough to deal with. Maybe a new mod level could be created with only tagging capabilities?

We're trying to give up on wide-open tag adding and limit it to posters tagging their own threads, which has been our intention all along. In practice, every time we close one access door, it seems that vBulletin has left another one open. We're getting there though. :)

It seems that I can still edit tags all over the place, including current news threads. After a lack of response to my email, somehow I suspect that this wasn't part of the plan... and that you guys, justifiably, have bigger fish to fry than flakey vBulletin tag implementation.

Lemme know if you want more detail. I don't want to waste anyone's time, including my own, by hunting down specifics, compiling a list and dumping them on you if the issue isn't important.

I've made some changes, and hopefully all of the holes have been buttoned up. I'm inviting anyone to take a poke around and see if there are any remaining issues.

Basically, everyone should be able to tag their own threads in any forum, but not be able to tag threads started by other people. So any help making sure that's the case would be appreciated. :)

I may be misunderstanding the proper way to use the new search, but personally I miss the old Forum search, where I would type in the box at the upper right, click on "Search Forums" and several threads come up. Now there is an extra step where I have to complete an "Image Verify" when I'm not logged in. So either way there's an extra step than there used to be when starting fresh on the Forums page. Either I have to log in and search to avoid the Image Verify or I have to complete the Image Verify. I guess this is a bit nitpicky, but when you're in a hurry, adding that extra step makes it a little bothersome. Just my two bits.
In any case, thanks to the MacRumors folks for working on enhance their site and make it more user friendly!

So maybe this would finally be a good way to group and easily find all the UK marketplace posts?
There's been a suggestion to add more thread prefixes for that purpose, but while we consider the idea you and other thread-starters are free to experiment with any tags you think would be helpful.
