Four new electrical contacts in the lightning connector of the MagSafe battery pack. Not sure what is designed to do.

fair guess: no usb type c, but a new generation of lightning? Like MagSafe type of lightning.

Nope. The next step of lightning is no ports. Apple hates ports with utmost passion.

CDT has a teardown of the battery pack. Those are just the four L-shaped mounting points that secure the Lighting port to the PCB.

For other devices, the Lightning port is held down using mounting points off to the sides.

It may be the future. But a USB-C port would be very convenient, at least for the time being.
