Improved Search...
Google has lifted the lid on its updated search engine, which developers have nicknamed "Caffeine".

Although still in the testing phase, the firm says it is the "first step in improving the speed, accuracy and comprehensiveness of search results".

The new engine will replace Google's current one after tests are complete.

Martin McNulty of search marketing specialist Trafficbroker said the upgrade threatened to put Microsoft's new engine, Bing, "in the shade".

"Google have let Caffeine quietly slip out. It talked about vertical specific searches while quietly doubling the speed and starts introducing real-time results and news feeds," he said.

"Bing was launched with a massive media budget.

"Trouble is, Bing presents itself as an alternative to something that users are still - for now - happy with," he added.

...and improved GFS...
As its custom-built file system strains under the weight of an online empire it was never designed to support, Google is brewing a replacement.

In an interview with the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM), Google's Sean Quinlan says that nearly a decade after its arrival, the Google File System has done things he never thought it would do.

I don't really care if Microsoft is successful or not. Why wouldn't I want any company to make a good product? In fact, I'd think it be nice if more people started using Bing. It has certainly brings up search results (or not in the same order of what it feels is important) that I don't get when I search Google, for better or worse.

I only want Bing to compete better with today, and tomorrow's, Google because I really don't want Google to get all the control over information.

While I'm no google fanboy by any stretch, Microsoft doesn't have the best track record either. I'm not sure who I'd prefer, but I seem to settle in to googling rather then binging my search needs.

It is important that Google have a big competitor though. I hope MS stay in the game, fruitless as it may be to them.

As long as MS have deep pockets it keeps Google on their toes. No bad thing.

The threat to Google will come from Baidu, not Bing.

Good point and I agree.

It's always best when you have at least two companies competing in the market place. It keeps the companies on their toes and provides a better product for the customer.
