New Governor General for Canada

The Prime Minister has announced the next Governer-General of Canada, when Her Excellency Adrienne Clarkson retires

Note-- The Governor General is the representative of the Queen in Canada. They serve a 5 year term and although the post is primarily a ceremonial and communication one, they in fact have the power to invest and dissolve the government (see the King-Byng crisis if you are interested in Canadian History)

I'm just blown away by the nominee: The incoming Governor General is Michaelle Jean - a documentary journalist and broadcaster (on both the English and French national networks). She is 48 years old, born in Haiti and grew up in Quebec. She speaks English, French, Spanish, Italian and Haitian Creole. She will be our third female and first Black Vice-Regal since Confederation.

Wow.

A female in a prominent position in politics.

AND she's black.

See that, America? Eh?

Okay okay, maybe it's not really a "political" role, but it kind of is. Canada is pretty good when it comes to women in power. Kim Campbell as PM, for example.

I don't really see the role of GG as being very important (she represents the Queen, but is pretty much a cheerleader for all things Canadian (I think)), but it's still a very prestigious honour.

sounds great! I never liked the selection of Clarkson, mainly because her horrid husband that calls himself a writer tags along with her everywhere riding her coattails for his own self-glorification. This looks like a very solid choice, her journalism work is very good, and it'll be good for the country's reputation when she is sent overseas as our representative because she encompases many different social groups and shows the youth of the country that government isn't always the same. Can you imaging if they continue this trend and make The Hour's George Stroumboulopoulos the next Governor General!

Duff-Man says...while I am not a huge fan of the appointment - just reeks of Paul Martin political correctness - anybody is better than that wasteful twit Adrienne Clarkson...sooner she is gone the better. The whole position should be abolished anyway - just a ceremonial waste of my tax dollars....oh yeah!

God forgive me, but I have a hard time remembering who the current one is. Not through any fault of Mme Jean, but through my inability to see the relevance of the title in this day and age.

BTW: bizarre thread to reincarnate, d'ya think?

Yes
She's not even attractive!

Shallow, insulting opinions aside, I think that George S. (His name is pure, liquid hatred for anyone attempting to quote him) would make an excellent Governor General. After all, he's already got the PR thing down. ;)

I understand the Gov't desire to appear all-inclusive to our immigrant citizens, but why not get at least a first-generation Canadian??

There must be another French-speaking immigrant family that we can tap??

Imagine George S being selected Gov. Gen. by Harper, especially when Stroumbo was the person who campaigned for Tommy Douglas an NDPer to be the "Greatest Canadian", but Trudeau did appoint an NDP premier Governor General once (and he recently ran as an NDP in the federal election and lost)
