New HD Boot 4 MacBook?

I just copied my 160gb to a wd 320gb external usb drive. How can i boot from the usb drive or tell if its a good copy before intalling it in the MB?

1. How did you copy it?
2. Hold down Option while booting.

I used superduper. Thanks for the tip. I'll try it. I held down t and it was looking for firewire.

I read somewhere that you could connect your MB to your imac with fire wire. If you did that and had a backup on the imac(partitioned), would you use t or option to boot?
