New HD in Lacie DVD enclosure

I'd like to use an external hard drive in an old Lacie DVD enclosure. Plugged it in and it spins up, but doesn't show up.

Any ideas?

Maybe it's not supplying enough power, as it's designed to supply enough power for a DVD drive, not a hard drive?

Possibly, but it spins up and sounds just fine. It's not bus-powered, so I assumed power wouldn't be a problem, but maybe it's regulating it somehow. Seems overly complicated, however.

Perhaps some sort of firmware flash would work?
