I'm about to buy the iPhone 3G, and am waiting until I learn of a rumored firmware upgrade to the current version.
Could that be happening today?

It maybe announced today. It maybe available today.

Also, if you are waiting for the firmware upgrade, you may want to wait until it's released and checked out by other forum members to see what exactly is fixed/changed.
