Since putting this video out the general comments have been that the first option is probably technicaly possible.
In the vid I said it was the accelerometers which provided all the movement data, but if the camera was switched on, it could use the visual data coming in to provide another "anchor" point for the position of the phone.
What do you think?

I think that would only work if the camera was very close to the anchor point, which would be impractical.
