It would be great if Apple could focus on leveraging existing hardware of combined devices that a user may have for AI requests. Is there a way to harness computing power from a continuity or integrated perspective?

Apple has backed a technology that could contribute to future Apple Intelligence advancements.

The consortium behind the "Ultra Accelerator Link" or "UALink" technology today announced that Apple, Alibaba, and Synopsys have joined its Board of Directors. The three companies will contribute to further development of the technology.

UALink is described as a "high-speed, scale-up interconnect for next-generation AI cluster performance." The consortium is aiming to release UALink 1.0 in the first quarter of 2025, and it will enable data speeds of "up to 200Gbps per lane."

The technology could pave the way for faster and more efficient Apple Intelligence servers.

"UALink shows great promise in addressing connectivity challenges and creating new opportunities for expanding AI capabilities and demands," said Becky Loop, Director of Platform Architecture at Apple. Loop added that "Apple has a long history of pioneering and collaborating on innovations that drive our industry forward."

It is not clear if or when Apple will adopt the technology, or if it is merely interested in helping out the overall AI industry.

Apple Intelligence servers are currently powered by the M2 Ultra chip, and they are expected to start using M4 series chips this year. In an eventual move away from Mac chips for server use, The Information recently reported that Apple has been developing a new AI server chip that will offer even faster performance for AI workloads.

American companies just can't learn, stop including chinese companies (mainland) in high tech. They will take the tech and make it available to the chinese guv. You would think apple would learn by now. Nearly impossible to get apple equipment out of china. fools

Good to know about this. But expecting it to take some time before some really useful Apple Intelligence features make their way to Apple devices.

That’s what they want for AI , so companies can use it without having to pay people. Coca Cola already did it by making a Christmas commercial with AI
The AI in that commercial was horrendous. I can't believe they aired it. Everything was so bad in it. The trucks looked like they were shifting through the town at an odd angle, almost diagonally. They were not moving like a real truck would.

I noticed that on the first watch wondering who the heck did that animation. It looked like a high school freshman's final project for an arts class. Another one was when objects were shifting in space during a Spielberg type push/pull in one or two scenes. I'd have to watch it again to catch the others. I tried to push it out of my mind. 😄

I rolled my eyes the moment I saw the "AI" branding at the end.

Don’t forget that commercial needed a ton of work from people to make the garbage that AI spit out look like…that.

It’s a bubble people, none of the promises are going to come true (other than layoffs to replace workers with technology that doesn’t do what the tech illiterate executive was promised on a golf course).

I think those who figure out that AI will allow their employees to be more productive and focus on more value-added activities will be the winners, and those who think AI will allow them to replace employees are going to have a rude awakening.

Okay but will I be able to add things to my shopping list without her saying “who’s speaking” and then “you’ll need to unlock your iPhone first”

That’d be so cool and futuristic.

Can you blame me that I’m a bit sceptical at this point? Siri was introduced 13+ years ago and Apple threw commercials at us what it is able to do. As of today it still can’t live op to those commercials 13+ years ago.

Last year Apple mentioned that Siri would get a big overhaul with iOS 18. Now iOS 18 is out and Siri is still braindead. I’m getting sceptical about a useful Siri with iOS 19. Than Apple is rolling out Siri in English first and we see it slowly able to speak other languages. 2027?

Siri in iOS 18 is still 80% old Siri and the most important part of Siri is still on the old code base.

Siri works like this on a very high level:
1. Capture voice
2. Translate voice into some kind of text representation
3. Trying to find out what the text from 2) means using traditional programming
4. Perform action
5. Inform user

#3 is the most important part to improve together with #4.

How Siri works in iOS 18:
1. Slightly improved
2. Improved
3. The same
4. The same
5. Slight improved

Nothing has really changed except Siri being a little better to understand English accents/dialects, stuttering or uncertain talk etc.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Siri could be worse in certain circumstances since the change in #2 might impact #3 in some unknown way.

I just want my camera app to open and not lag on my beautiful brand new iPhone 16 Pro… tried all the basics clean install etc. Was in Hawaii in real use situations and that Samsung sure took beautiful pictures by the time my camera app opened up and had a usable screen…

Why do you go on vacation with two mobile phones?
Just use the one which is best for you.

And their defense for it was now they can make more ads in less amount of time, not to cut back on expenses.

But yeah ai is lifeless & uncreative

I’m reminded of all the infrastructure that was built during in the late 90s during the dot com boom. After the bubble popped we were left with alot of “dark fiber” and vacant data centers. Fortunately we eventually found uses for all that unused infrastructure. I’m hoping the same thing happens with the amazing chips that are being created today but are being wasted on useless AI.

Honestly I think intelligence firms (Palantir for example) are just waiting to scoop up the *massive* amount of compute that will be desperate for buyers in just a few years time.

You may not have, but shareholders and the tech press absolutely would have. Apple was already getting eaten alive with “Apple has no AI” prior to WWDC last year; I’m convinced they actually announced Apple Intelligence a year before they originally planned because of it.
That is true.

Should have said my friend had a Samsung and that baby worked beautifully am I gonna switch to a google icky product no. But that iPhone 16 pro purchase due to my iPhone 13 needing updating wasn’t the right purchase.
