Frustrating headline. What you mean is:

New HomePod Can't Be Stereo-Paired with First-Generation HomePod

As written, it sounds like neither the new nor the old can be stereo-paired at all.
I got rid of my OG HomePods in the house because they were causing recurring homekit related problems that got to be too much to bear despite still being good speakers for the home entertainment center.

Not surprising, given that the 1st-gen firmware won’t be getting updates anymore.

But that’s the reason I don’t like such integrated hardware. Either give me smart speakers I can attach to any amp, or a smart audio device I can attach to any speakers.

In (quality) stereo audio, it is absolutely mandatory to use two identical speakers. So even if pairing gen 1 and 2 would be possible, it would still be a bad idea.

That being said, I‘m very curious how the sound of these will compare. I‘m using a pair of first gen HomePods every day and they still sound awesome, especially for the size (and price).

Speakers are long useful life products. As long as they can play, they should sound "awesome" 10 or even 20 years from now. The trick with any smart speakers: will the "smarts" be updated to allow the "dumb" part to keep playing that long? I strongly suspect NO.

Smart! This is THE way to go.

iDevices and/or AppleTV can be the smarts separate from the speaker. Pair those with ANY quality, size, color, shape speakers anyone can want. That gets you Siri "smarts(?)" and any kind of speakers, any size of speakers, mono-stereo-5.1-7.1-ATMOS in 2023.

The "dumb" speakers will be able to still serve you with great sound 10 or 20 years from now. The "smarts" can be upgraded/deprecated/replaced with other smarts many times between now and then. No dependency on a corporation choosing for you to keep the speakers up to date... or even able to play anything. No walled garden limitations on what can be played.

So basically HomePod SE?

I don't think my space gray will agree to be paired with either of these colors. If they really wanted pairing between generations they should at least keep colors the same, in addition to any new colors they might want to introduce.

And this is why I am afraid of any first-gen Apple device. As much as I want the AirPods Max, I’m patiently waiting for 2nd-gen. …probably won’t buy the VR/AR device til 2nd-gen in 2030.

At least you be getting your midnight request.😂
True but I wish it was the MBP 16" tho. Also, why does the HomePod in Midnight look Space gray or black? Or am I tripping?

the (shockingly rare) voice of reason finally emerges.

I can’t wait for this to fail. Expensive stereo system that has a terrible virtual assistant and glitches 24/7. Trillion dollar company that can’t get it right. Embarrassing

I have seven HomePods (5 OG,2 mini). All work great and produce superb sound.

Looking forward to purchasing two more of the latest model.

"I can’t wait for this to fail."

Wanting to see something to fail so badly is really bizarre. I want a lot of things. Not one of them is hoping for something to fail.

Apple: Let’s give the product a new colour without jeopardising any margin.

Engineer: Let’s call it midnight, but use the same dyecolour as the other products we have. We know people love midnight and the space grey would fit nicely to the description.

Apple: Sounds like no margin loss to me. Approved.
