The first gen was a commercial failure. Don’t see how this one wouldn’t be, seeing as it’s more or less the same product, years later.

I have to say, this Homepod (to me) is one of the strangest product releases Apple have ever done, since I became a follower back in 2004.
A failure in what way? You are assuming this because they discontinued the product, but that could have been due to the supply chain issues and the need to free up productions lines. Apple has never released unit or gross sales for the product, so it is presumptuous to think that it was a failure.

Did they know something we didn’t also when they released the first version that sold so little they had to withdraw it? Because some of us laughed at the product back then too, and we were told it would be successful. It wasn’t.
It was very successful as it led to the highly successful mini which now leads to bringing back an updated HomePod. Btw if you dislike the product so much then why are you here?

You're joking right?

Make what you will of these articles, if they aren't proof enough, I can tell you these things were constantly on sale. Here are a few articles that mention it, but I remember seeing piles of these things because very few people bought them. A 43 % discount is not exactly common for Apple. I don't think they were just being nice. :)

Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the product line - I even bought a HomePod mini last week, but I'm just saying that I will be very surprised if this iteration of the HomePod turns out to be a success.

its reality not strange.

If you have ever dabbled in whole-house multi-room music it's a real boon.
Its great to have music simultaneously playing in multiple rooms.

Amazon have been doing this for years, so have google, so have sonos...
so apple getting in on the act isnt strange in the slightest. And the fact there are now devices to choose from is only a good thing.
To be technically correct (the best kind of correct!), Apple has been in the multi-room audio business since the AirPort Express, which slightly predates Sonos’ first product.
