So a failed product returns five years later with no real changes, the same price point, and similar acoustics, and Apple expects it to sell now
The Hollywood armchair psychologist definition of insanity is apparently repeating the same thing and expecting a different outcome.

[..] If one's audio needs are modest and/or one is a diehard Apple fanboy, HomePod is surely "good enough". For everyone else, it's a bizarre dead-end product full of compromises.[…]

I think it does target a specific market. It's a "me too" product aimed at their diehard fanboy audience who would buy poop on a stick if it came with an Apple logo. […]

There's a small percentage of Apple customers who basically want everything Apple. When the iPhone 14 was announced with Satellite SOS, these forums had plenty of people gushing about how they now felt safe on a backpacking trip or on remote stretches of highway, etc. The fact that Garmin, SPOT, etc. have offered more effective satellite emergency beacons for DECADES didn't matter to these fanboys. […]
Lots of use of the word “fanboy”. Those tens of millions of people who like and buy apple products — coupled with some hyperbole about buying poop in a stick.

Apple does what apple does best, make tech available to the masses. Just what it did with satellite sos. Garmin is shaking in their boots as they are looking at their revenue dry up.

Temperature and humidity are gimmicks at best. 99.9% of prospective customer won't care.
Citation.

Lmao. They are literally the gold standard for consumer home theater.
LOL. They aren't anything compared to Kiplsh, etc. Tell me one movie thearer that uses sonos. I don't know about you. I have a 85", "65" ad 90" tvs...all three have receivers (denon),. and 8 speakers....Pictures fall off my wllls when I watch a movie. That is how it should be done. Course you watch on a laptop or computer....who cares. (but i would never subject myself to that)

Yes, movies and audio are my life. I actually refused to buy the low end car cause speaker systrem was horrible (I was the kid in the 90s with the sub, amp, tweeters, etc in car next to you). I am currently trying to make this (yes I guess I am not your average users)

However, I was before everyone went to inferior mp3s, and compressed videos on digital I was.

It's just marketing. They do this for something to sell. They aren't manipulating sound in any significant way.
Incorrect. The original HomePod released without the ability to do stereo pairing. They were still working on the software that would allow the two units to calculate the reflection/sound cancelling properly together.

I pre-ordered it back then, and it's still going strong. Already pre-ordered 4 new ones.

Glad to see the reviews are positive around the sound. This will no doubt outrage anyone saying it was going to be inferior due to fewer drivers over the previous generation. Apple's acoustic division have been consistently improving sound quality in products for several years now, just look at how far the MacBooks have come alone.

I won't be upgrading my first-gen stereo pair though, they do a great job already.

Sadly, yes. That's the only way some people can find happiness in their day.

I was expecting performance to be the same or better. Nice to see that it is. I'll probably pick up two more.

Bro come on, I'm not sure anyone, even iJustine, could match the level of pissantry fart sniffing that Rene Ritchie did. Not even DED from AppleInsider was as bad as Rene.
Oh god don't get me started on DED. He makes Rene look objective. At least Rene doesn't sockpuppet his own "editorials" with three different aliases or offers his previous articles as "evidence" in his current article.

What tf does a movie theater have to do with consumer home theater?

Not sure why you replied to me. Likely you intended to reply to someone else, but you're clearly expecting the SAME outcome from repeating the same behaviour, so you're obviously not insane.

The goal should be for both to be as similar as possible, If not why bother watching stuff at home?

You have been complaining and trashing the new homepod just because you had a bad experience and don't like them. Guess what a lot of us didn't. BTW if you don't want a reply don't post.

That's a pretty insane take.
Um ok....Been that way for me at 16 and still is today at 47, and now I have money to accomplish it!) For example, in hotels I refuse to watch anything new cause I refuse not to have home theater (dolby atmos, etc). For trailers I wil not watch on computer only large screen tv's etc.

Not everyone lives in a stand alone house where you can rattle the walls so hard that pictures fall off the wall. Some live in condos or apartments where you just can't do that. So sometimes a smaller sound system is what is needed. The Digital Trends video above said a pair of these actually present a great sound stage for TV and Movies with spatial audio soundtracks. In the right setting that may what someone needs to pair with their Apple TV.

And that is why I haven't had an apartment since 1998, BTW I still shook walls in apartments.. Sure I got complaints but then they vacuum loud :p

I did have the police called on me in 1994 because the neighbor next store thought the explosion in Speed was real / LOL. I loved that one.

I wonder how much better it would have performed with the new audio processing tech combined with the old setup of more and fancier tweeters.

Hardly. Apple's satellite SOS has a lot of flaws, starting with the iPhone itself. No serious outdoors person would rely on an iPhone for SOS given how the batteries fail in cold weather and at higher altitudes. In over 10 years of regular use my SPOT has never failed me. My iPhone, on the other hand, dies all the time when it gets too cold or when I'm at a higher altitude.

My annual SPOT service also included global evac and medical insurance. SPOT (and Garmin) also let you share your location with friends and family so they can see where you are on your trip. In tracking mode, with location updates being sent every 10 minutes, the (replaceable) AAA batteries in my SPOT last a month or more. Good luck getting a day out of an iPhone if you're recording a GPS track.

As for the fanboys, there's a small percentage (I wouldn't say tens of millions) of customers who won't even consider other brands or products. As soon as Apple releases a product, they act like it's something revolutionary and amazing. HomePod is a perfect example. So is the satellite SOS feature. I'm not saying these products and features are bad, but there are much better options and those options have existed for years. So yes, HomePod is for the fanboys, not for anyone who is serious about home audio.

Or, you could just get into Sonos and have everything.

Home Pod =/= Home Theater.
I am sure some people will or have. However, my own personal needs means having standing B&W speakers for stereo and a sub that dips into the 18khz range. Being able to use HomePods for surround Atmos would be a great feature, though, since I don't want to mount even more speakers in the space (it is already a bit much lol).

I already have a HomePod near the surround speakers in my living room. It is ideal for the space because of its small footprint and 360 dispersion that allows us to hear it when we are in the kitchen or living room. My Denon receiver also has has Airplay 2 built in, so it is easy to have just the main system, just the HomePod, or both playing with just a vocal command to the HomePod.

I should mention that one of my buddies was looking at replacing the archaic outdoor speakers at his home. I recommended that he look into Sonos and he found a guy to install their system (modules connected to Klipsh outdoor speakers), so I am not against Sonos. I just don't find that it works better than any of my current solutions.

Projection, much? I've never owned one and likely never will.
Grrrrl, I thrive on replies, as clearly as your spammy ass does...
