Was excited for this when I thought we were getting SirAI but she’s as ignorant as ever. On the line about just handing over my data and privacy to Alexa even though I really don’t want to. Day to day and around the house Alexa is far superior in almost every way.

But there is nothing keeping anyone from having a mobile device in a fixed location now.
Other family members taking it, plus the likely added cost of a device such as an iPad Mini or iPad made to be carried around and used for a wider variety of things.

They could offer a home hub app. for people who just want to control it from their iPad or iPhone, but it sounds like Apple wants a dedicated hub product. I'm not sure of the market dynamics, but it seems Amazon sells varied versions of the Echo Show rather than just saying but an Amazon tablet with Alexa service on it.
If Apple tried to produce such a device without its AI, it could be reasonably priced because none of the remaining functionality requires a lot of computational resources.
But that A.I. functionality has the potential to create a superior customer experience. I imagine Amazon wants to do something like that with the Echo Show line. 'Inferior but cheaper' is not the product category market segment Apple tends to aim for.
so I don’t think “low cost device” is a priority for Apple. Has it ever been, though?
Gotta be at a price enough people will pay, unless they want to be to home automation what Rolex is to watches.

Less adverts, more security / privacy, HomeKit integration, better build quality, better sound, more updates.

However Jack will have plenty of opportunity to buy directly from his Amazon Portal, give away his data
Please elaborate on the 'privacy' and 'data' concern. I ask this because those have become loaded 'buzzwords' in discussions about the tech. sector (e.g.: Meta, Google), but they're often stated without specifics. Just what are people afraid of?

I get the concern about identity theft, credit card numbers and data breaches, but I don't think that's the concern.

So take our hypothetical Jack using an Amazon Echo Show. What about his privacy is harmed? What 'data' is he giving away that is problematic?

How much should he care?

The main impact of data collection I've noticed over the year is when I visit websites the banner ad.s are more often relevant to things I've been looking at online, so targeted marketing. Oh, and the litany of popups on everybody and his dog's webpage cookies policy for me to click something on.

I ask these things because if the hypothetical Apple home hub product is likely to have a serious advantage over the Amazon Echo Show line regarding these things, people need to know the specifics and what pertains to them.

You want a speaker to be a speaker, not another wasted LED display to control other Home Kit accessories. Keep It Simple Stupid is a standard practice for all Engineering Disciplines.

Learn to remember that Apple. You had a decade to produce a C-cable ready Thermostat with a central Interface for the HomeKit and you haven't done so. Why not? Does it need some absurd Micro-LED display? No. Does it need FaceID? No, does it need to be a central Intercom for the home? No.

It needs to control lights, automate audio and manage room temperature. We don't need an AI Assistant telling us the current Weather forecast and latest crap news from News.

No need to worry.

With 2 Billion active and repeat customers, Apple has an outstanding track record of giving Apple customers what they want. Year after year after year.

Yes... Apple Sox, Apple HiFi, and Apple Power Mac G4 Cube were flops. But those were introduced when Apple was under different leadership.

If someone is moving it then it's not really at a fixed location. The aim would be a device that has a dedicated location and purpose, which is what this rumored device would be. This new device incurs an added cost, does it not? Keep in mind that in reality, many already have a spare older device that would be more than enough to dedicate to home automation control if Apple were to do a "headless" dock-style device instead, as I described.

Agreed, they could/should have a good control app, but you still need the back end hub to interact with the smart devices. My take is that those functions don't require an expensive device as long as it's headless, but Apple will probably saddle it with screen, camera, Apple Intelligence, jacking the price up.

Not sure I buy this where home automation is concerned. What benefit does advanced AI provide to handling requests like "turn on the kitchen lights", "set the thermostat to 70 degrees", "raise the family room shades", "start the coffee machine", "lock the front door", "we're watching a movie"?

Agree.

Depends on intended scope. Think of a kid asking an Echo Show questions. AI wouldn't help much for the tasks you mention, but something along the lines of 'Siri, what are today's news headlines' would be a different story. They'll have to put a lot of thought into how they expect this thing to be used.

After all the i'Phone' serves so many purposes beyond being a phone.

I trusted Steve Jobs when he introduced the first Mac. And Cook when Jobs appointed him CEO. An outstanding move by Jobs; especially with Apple now having 1 billion active and repeat customers who love Apple products, under Cooks leadership.
You could call me a repeat customer. Do I love Apple? Absolutely not. In fact, sometimes I question why I still use them. Then I realize no matter how bad the bugs get and how bad these new "features" are , I won't get an android. The walls are high in the garden, but they have done nothing but weaken over the last few years. "It just works" is a thing of the past with Apple and I can't stand it

I am really sorry to hear that.

"It just works" works for me and my two desktop Macs (one running 24/7 for home automation and security video cams), my two MacBook laptops, my two iPads, my Apple Watch, my five HomePods, my Apple TV, and my iPhone 16 (along with Apple CarPlay). They're all solid and work very well together.

If the above were not true...having agency, I'd drop Apple in a minute and go forward with competitor products.

Just because my phone and my airpods work seamlessly together along with my mac, doesn't mean my phone is perfect and doesn't have any bugs. If you don't experience any bugs on singular devices, then you should consider yourself very lucky. As mentioned above, it's not enough to get me to switch, the grass is always greener, but it is extremely annoying and frustrating sometimes

I'm not sure what you are going on about. My flat screen tv's are 16:9 and youtube tv displays perfectly fine on them.
You mentioned that the rumored HomePod with display may be a nice add-on TV. And I referred to the rumor that it might have a square screen format (I.e. 1:1).

Your TV has 16:9 and thus displays YouTube TV fine - because its (hardware) format matches the TV („software“) format.

If the rumored HomePod with display has indeed a square screen, however, it will display those shows only with thick black bars on top and bottom, thus taking away a lot of the - already limited - screen space. Therefore I question the experience you would get from watching TV on a small square screen .

And I said who is to say it won't have a 16:9 display.

Okay - now I got you. I assumed your mentioning of the 4:3 referred to the TV show(s) you wanted to watch, not the hardware (the 1:1 format rumor comes from Mark Gurman). Sorry - my bad!
