Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone is expected to feature a book-style form factor that's relatively uncommon in the foldables market, but Huawei's new Pura X Max appears to share a similar wide aspect ratio.

Set to be released in China next week, Huawei's new device actually builds upon a design used by the original, smaller Pura X, which was marketed last year as an extra-wide flip phone. Little is known about the Pura X Max beyond its triple lens rear camera, while Huawei's imagery shows the device being used in both portrait and landscape.

Prior to the Pura X Max's unveiling, Apple's rumored device was said to most resemble Oppo's Find N5. Samsung is also believed to be adopting a similar wide aspect ratio form factor for one of its upcoming foldables.

We've heard plenty of rumors about the foldable iPhone‌'s design, but the first alleged dummy models appeared last week. The device will have a 5.5-inch display when closed, making it Apple's smallest current-generation iPhone. When open, it will be around 7.8 inches, which is around half an inch smaller than the iPad mini.

Apple is expected to debut its first foldable alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models in September, with a launch likely to shortly follow the Pro devices' release. Most rumors have suggested that the ‌foldable iPhone will start at around $2,000 and be available in traditional space gray/black and silver/white finishes.

One rumor claims that Apple will call it the "iPhone Ultra," rather than "iPhone Fold," which is the shorthand the media has largely been using.

Well, at least the usable screen when open makes some sense if the intent is a more portable tablet. I wouldn’t want to carry it (or any other foldable, really) in my pocket.

The 1:1 aspect ratio on the outer display feels a bit unusual. It seems like this is designed to be used unfolded most of the time.

And look at that, three cameras on a foldable. Turns out it can be done. Curious what excuse Apple will come up with if they decide two is suddenly all we need.

If they are first they are not copying?
Blueprints can be stolen, you know.

Not that I'm interested in that conversation, but if the manufacturers are in China, and if they have access to design information, it's probably not hard for someone to snag industry secrets.

I'm sure there are a few hard-working individuals out there who don't mind making lookalike products in a cash-grab attempt.

EDIT: Even if they made a standalone product, I'm not sure I'd want it, given the camera bump.

There is also the fact that the iPhone Fold screen sizes have been known since April of last year.

You mean rumors? In any case, if the goal is to make a device with roughly a smart phone form factor that unfolds into a roughly small tablet form factor, the aspect ratio options become constrained. It’s pointless to accuse anyone playing in that space of “copying.”

Or Huawei had this design already given their success of foldable phones over there and Apple is now copying potential blueprints from those companies. We never know nowadays with how information is vastly shared. What comes around goes around 🙂

Apple cares too much about their stock, reputation, and brand and not enough creativity coming out anytime soon.

This is absolutely the correct form factor for a foldable. You get an iPad's form factor when it's open, which is far more useful than the usual square form factor of other foldables.
They are doing favor to Apple. Testing waters with this format.

I dont know what to say but what do you expect they are well known for copy everything
You could actually say….. Apple’s folding iPhone looks very similar to the Google Pixel Fold… but what would one expect when you’re always last in the game 😂😂😂
Huawei has been producing foldables for several years. Their products are by far more superior and technically advanced than any phone coming out of the USA.
And, it’s interesting a company or country that’s so far advanced in technology would have their products manufactured in a country that’s not so advanced… mmmmm gotta scratch my head thinking about the logic in this scenario….
😂😂😂
Have a good day mate !!!

Remaining questions which will determine whether I go for the 18 Fold or the 18 Pro:
• Can I hold and use the front screen with one hand given how wide it is?
• Are the external and internal screens as bright as the 18 Pro?
• Can I really live with only 2x zoom?
