Here, as promised, new iMac next to Dell U2711 :)

Ooo, that looks Nice. I have a similar setup at work but my 27 inch monitor is only 1080p.

Question, a lot of the cables I am seeing that are mini-displayport to DVI say max resolution is 1080p. Is that true? I'm thinking of getting a 2560x1440 monitor like this one, does it HAVE to have get a monitor with a display port to connect to a late 2012 (thin) iMac and get full resolution?

...What about 4k? I've read that Macbook Pros can run 4k monitors, how about an iMac?

DVI tops out at 1920x1200. To get 2450x1440, you'll need to use DisplayPort. You can use dual-link DVI (two DVI channels bound together), but adapters are between $75-$100.

A miniDisplayPort (which also works on Thunderbolt) to DisplayPort cable is around $5 domestically (as posted repeatedly on page 1 of this thread). The Dell posted above I believe has a full-sized DisplayPort connector, so all you need is one of these simple cables to go from Apple's mini connector to the full-size connector on the Dell.

Some monitors have mDP connectors, so all you'd need is a straight mDP to mDP cable. Also around $5.
