Last week I purchased a new base model IMac (2.4Ghz, 20"). Naturally the new generation were released a week after my purchase. My reasoning was simple: I needed a machine. I use it mostly for home recording (Logic) and don't really need the enhanced graphics.

The Apple Store web page lists a clearance price of $999 for the model I purchased. In checking Apple's return and price guarantee policy I was confronted with two options. Return the IMac and pay the restocking fee to upgrade or let Apple refund me $200 (the difference between the price I paid at $1199 and the new clearance price of $999).

I decided to take the refund. I still don't need the enhanced graphics and, with 4GB of RAM the IMac 2.4 does a great job with Logic and plug-ins.

The folks at the Apple Store didn't flinch and promptly refunded the difference and I then proceeded to buy a 500GB Time Capsule. (they were also willing to let me return the IMac w restocking and get a new generation. That was tempting for a moment)

Just posting in case someone had questions about Apple's policies.

    How about you do both??

Take the $200 refund and leave. Then the next day come back and tell them you want an exchange see if the new sets of people that work there will be this mean to you if not they'll let you exchange it for no restocking fee and if not then eat the restocking fee and hand them the $200 back and keep probably some $$ and get the new imac + use it extra change to eat chickfila. :D

I did the same thing. The $200 price drop was a great deal for me.

Wow you guys just opened up a whole new avenue for me that I did not know existed! I could not wait any longer for the "new imacs are coming" and so I pulled the trigger on the 3.06 GHz 24" iMac with the Nvidia 8800 GS last Tuesday.

I was all set to return it (either eating the RS fee or maybe getting lucky and NOT eating it) but had no idea if I keep this machine that Apple will give me the price difference BACK! That is crazy good news as the new machines really are not much better than the one I bought last week.

Of course the RAM is better/faster (hard drives do nothing for me as I have to many externals as it is) but maybe not enough for me to eat a $200+ restocking fee. Now if I go in to my store and they have an ATI in stock ( I know they don't and won't until 10.7 just for argument sake) then I would most likely take the new machine. But as things stand now if Apple will give me $200 back on the new prices I'll keep my plenty screaming 8800 gs iMac take the money and put it towards either 1) a time capsule or 2) a mac mini or both!

Give it a shot, but I think you might be a different case. The 3.06 model doesn't show on the clearance page that I can see. If you're close to a store, I'd try to take it back. But do it quickly as the closer you get to 14 days, the less likely they are to waive the restock in my opinion.
