Ah

Referencing saved by the bell doesn't make you appear credible. You also knew what he meant. Thinning something out makes a difference when you gain something from it. The bulge still exists in the back. The overall footprint of the device hasn't changed. There is really no functional change. The desk space required is still the same. It doesn't allow for new positioning. It's still too large to conveniently transport.

The whole point was to remove the optical drive in the guise of getting "thinner" when in reality it was so they can continue to push their itunes streaming movie business. As in "if they don't have a choice, they'll stream it from us." Um, no.

I am bewildered by all this negativity spewing out of a bs rumor!

1st. Apple site shows no delay!

2nd.. Those of u who think the new imac is not innovative or is a dog.. What have u been smoking? It has the fastest intrl chips and nvidia graphics cards incorporated.

The fusion drive alone is an increadible performance enhancer... Check benchmarks and u will see.

The new laminated screen technology.. Far superior.. Offering much clearer picture .. Better contrast and color.

No optical drive? Well hook up an external one...big deal. Last time i used an optical drive was maybe a year ago...

As for esthetics.. Believe it or not.. Some prople actually enjoy that.. Like having nice cars,. Homes, cloths, etc... Nice objects creat a nicer environment to be surrounded with... Good for the soul.... Most like that.

If u think the new imac is not good.. Go buy a refurbished old one...
But i know most of u wont.. U like what the new imac is all about... And u are just venting frustration over a stupid rumor!

U want vent about domething... Kerp bombarding apple eith their embarrassingly weak. Contextual word recognition and spell check !

I wish I knew what you were trying to say, something about word recognition and spell check. I think you need to use a spell check.

No user replaceable parts...no upgradeable parts...no optical drives....yeh no loss there!

iMacs, along with many other Macs have never been particularly user serviceable/upgradeable though.
It's only the 21.5" model that is listed as having non user upgradeable ram (the 27 can be user upgraded). And even then, the Apple site claims the stock 8gb config has "2 X 4gb" modules. Which suggests there are still individual ram modules in there. So at a guess, no more difficult to replace/upgrade than it was to change the HD on my 07 iMac.
I guess we'll know for sure when iFixit gets to tear one down.

Peronally i wouldn't care the slightest for any of these. Maybe memory upgrade only. Optical drive? Don't think i have ever used that thing on my 2011 iMac!

Fair enough but I don't see why many others who do value these items should be left out in the cold.

I'm wondering how this will affect Apple's stock come January's quarterly announcements.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

Middle of October Apple announces new iMac.
Apple makes it so you can't buy an iMac (except for a refurb). You can't even pre-order.

So how much is it going to hurt them to not sell a single iMac for possibly 2-3 months?

I think this is a mistake to not have a desktop computer for customers to buy for more than a couple of weeks.

What exactly is mobile GPU doing in the desktop computer?

Being considerably cooler and quieter and much more energy efficient than a desktop monster card?

The 680 line is just about the best performance per watt you can get, and it means the computer can be virtually silent during normal operation.

Wrong, it still says "coming in november" down on the botton!

The BANNER referenced by the other post has been changed to "Coming Soon". The on-line store says available in November, another location on the site says "Coming in November".

So the Apple site does still push the message NOVEMBER. What that means in available stock and when will tell the story.

Here we go again with the optical drive argument. Move on already it's 2012! Retailers are barely selling CDs (a majority of them are cutting it out of their inventories), all major software companies offer software installations, drivers, updates etc. over the internet. There's NO excuse.

Here are a few others that you may not know:
1. Cloud storage for photos or facebook. Stop using the "I have to burn a CD for a friend/family". Use email. Don't use slow internet speeds as an excuse. Even third world countries have broadband internet.

2. Cars have an audio jack for your iPhone: why bother trying to switch between 5-10 CDs to find a song you want?

3. Backup: there are a lot of VERY CHEAP professional backup facilities online that you can use that's FAR MORE foolproof than any backup to a CD/DVD that you do yourself. I'm talking fireproof buildings. Offsite mirrored servers, biometric buildings etc. etc. Compare that to a the security of a general user's CD case.

4: If you're too cheap to afford that use a UNIVERSAL serial bus (USB) device. The hint is the word universal, it can be used on virtually any hardware today and is far easier to carry, less prone to damage etc.

5. Blu-ray movies: Why? Blu-ray is limited to specific players whereas you can download a digital version on iTunes which you can play on ANY computer, laptop, iPhone/iPad etc. etc. It's also cheaper, does not break or scratched by little kids, is weightless and can be redownloadble when you get a new computer.

There's no advantage to using CDs except for maybe the nostalgia of using it. It is inferior to technology offerings available today.

Yes you can do it the way you say but if you have good ears and good eyes the "old" way is still better. better sound in the car from disk, better quality on Blue Ray for movies, when Apple decide in their wisdom to do High quality sound and vision your then downloads will be fine (also remember not everyone has access to very fast internet)
iMac delays,we are all getting excited over a rumour but if this is true its a PR disaster as there seems to be a ground swell of Apple fans and users getting fed up with Beta products being released, the polish is wearing thin, literally in the case of the iPhone.

Fair enough but I don't see why many others who do value these items should be left out in the cold.

as Schiller put it, “for those still stuck in the past,” Apple still offers the external USB Superdrive for $79 ;)

The bonus for me is that it can sit in a drawer if not needed(used my DVD writer a handful of times on my mbp) is great. :D

Nobody's seen it yet, except a handful of writers at the announcement.

Can you find a single clear photo of the rear of thing? How big is the bulge? What happened to Apple's spinnable QuickTime images of their computers? They don't want anyone to notice that the thinness is just an illusion based on the edge.

It's pretty easy to go to the Apple site and look at the pics. in the iMac gallery. They have a side pic. that clearly shows the bulge in the back. I don't see that they are trying to hide anything.

It's unfortunate there could be a delay with these. My boyfriend is looking for a photo editing solution other than using his 13" MBP, and was eyeing a new iMac.

On another note, I understand when people say they want a Retina iMac, but let's be real, it's not feasible at this point. LG, Samsung, et al are just beginning to unveil TVs with so-called "Ultra HD" resolution (that would be 3840 x 2160)... and that's at 84" large. And will sell for a cool $20K. I know the average Mac user tends to be well-heeled compared to the rest, but I don't think they're that well-heeled. Here's some interesting figures regarding pixels per square inch:

Current iMac 21.5"
2,304,000 pixels
102.46 ppi

Current iMac 27"
3,686,400 pixels
108.79 ppi

iPad 4
3,145,728 pixels
263.92 ppi

As you can see, the iPad 4 sits in between the current 21.5" and 27" iMacs in regards to total pixel count. The important thing to note here is that the iPad's ppi is a direct result of cramming more pixels into a smaller size screen. With smaller screens, we've been able to simply quadruple the number of pixels to get double the resolution and thus an impressive ppi... but does this work at larger sizes? Lets see:

Retina iMac 21.5"
9,216,000 pixels
210.62 ppi

Retina iMac 27"
14,745,600 pixels
217.57 ppi

Those are some pretty eye popping pixel counts needed for a relatively lack-luster "retina" ppi. Furthermore, its extremely doubtful anyone would need 200+ ppi for a desktop monitor of any kind. It's going to still be several years before we see 9+ million count screens in that size range, as the manufacturing means just don't exist yet (can you imagine batch yields? Yikes!).

What I can imagine is that, perhaps, 1440p/1600p will take over 1080p/1200p in the quest for "retina" screens in the 21.5"-24" markets. That would provide roughly 136-140 ppi which is pretty good if you ask me (that's also very close to the ppi of the MacBook Airs; if you want an indication, place an MBA screen 1-2 feet away and look at it. The overall smoothness would be the same). Unfortunately, I feel that 27" screens will not get a bump in resolution anytime soon. Outside of Apple, relatively few companies even offer 27" at 2560 x 1440... many still offer them at a horrific 1920 x 1080, which should be a sin.

So yeah. Retina iMacs next year... I wouldn't count on it :)

Are you not capable of comprehending Chupa Chupa's post? It is a STRING of poor decisions / performance under Cook's leadership (or lack thereof) that is tanking the stock and worrying Apple fans.

The iMac "rumor" may or may not be accurate - we will know soon. But the iPhone assembly issues, Maps, iTunes 11 delay, Browett hiring / firing, are all REAL - not rumors.

All negative spin... Cook has done just fine... If u think mistakes did not happen when Steve was around u have been living under a rock somewhere.

These are the facts i see..
This whole thread is based on a bs rumor.
The new lineup is fantastic and unprecedented . Cook made it happen.
The new iMac is super impressive!
The managment reshuffle is great for apple and synergy in products. Cook did it.
Briwett was a moron that had to be ousted... Better sooner than later.
I love the new maps.. The turn by turn voice and the 3d ... Sure no street view.. But i have had more functionality out of the new features than i miss street view.
Map is more noise than an issue.. And it is getting better by the day.
Apple guidance of 52 billion is no joke.. It is 40% above their guidance for last holiday!
And i dont think they just winged that number.. They looked at what they can produce and demand.. And as always lowballed it too.

Apple did not invent the manufacturing process fir these products yesterday for them to stumble on it today.
Thry new what they can produce before they announced a guidance!

I wasn't aware they new iMacs have droped functionality. I actually thought they have bumbed the functionality on the new iMacs. Maybe not to satisfy the hig expectations.... but somehow compare to the older models. Guess i was wrong then.

Er, they dropped the optical drive. Didn't you hear?

The whole point was to remove the optical drive in the guise of getting "thinner" when in reality it was so they can continue to push their itunes streaming movie business. As in "if they don't have a choice, they'll stream it from us." Um, no.

I figured that as more of a pleasing coincidence for Apple. iTunes makes up a rather small portion of their operating income, and cd/dvd sales have been in decline. My real point was that some people were unable to differentiate between miniaturization driven by the evolution of internal components compared to basing the form factor around tacky aesthetics. I like minimalism for functional reasons, and this doesn't really aid in functionality.

The main thing I like is that they worked on display improvements. I didn't expect it as custom display work can very expensive. I figured that the cost of anything custom on a display of that size combined with desktops being the smaller portion of their Mac derived operating income would kill such a concept. In the past the imacs have used commodity parts with minimally customized implementation, and this is a departure from that. Back in September there was a rumor that imacs were held up due to problems with the lamination process. Given how far they've been pushed back, it was probably true. They also could have pushed such a thing back to next year, but I guess the retina macbook pro applied a certain amount of pressure to update the imac design as much as possible.

Er, they dropped the optical drive. Didn't you hear?

Nobody uses them... Plus fir 50 dollars u can have an external one!
They also dropped the floppy drive years ago.. Do u miss it?

Which is more important to u.. A super clear screen.
The fusion drive that doubles performance and lowers storage cost for the given performance...? Or having no internal optical drive that no one uses any way. Which u have the option of having an external one in the rare event that u may need one!.?

Although I agree its not hard to find a side view image (http://i.imgur.com/dyThz.jpg) None of the 5 images they have in the imac gallery that i can find are side views (http://www.apple.com/imac/design/).

Am i missing something?

Edit:
I notice this side view http://i.imgur.com/QYUFV.png
Tiny picture though.

i also haven't used my optical drive in a long while, it's just kinda weird that it doesn't come with one. couldn't they have put it in the 'hump' part?

Yeah, never understood why they keeping making monitors/computers thinner....

Oh, I'm sorry, you must be confused.

Let me help you out.

Nobody has anything against computers getting thinner.

It's when they compromise useful parts JUST to make it thinner ...at the same price.....that's when we all start scratching our heads wondering if it's worth it.
