i finally found the time to backup everything so i can format the iMac and install from scratch.. but no more crashes have happened during this week so I decided i'm gonna wait a bit (avoiding reinstalling all those programs again) - maybe it got over it or is it waiting for the right time to crash hours of unsaved work? to format or not to format?

ok this is really pissing me off, i can't eject games, is there any way to force eject without having to restart??? when i push the eject key, the icon will leave the desktop but the disk will remain in the computer

EDIT: also whenever i can't get the CD/DVD to eject, i will have to unplug the imac because it will hang with just the desktop picture showing and wont' complete the shutdown
None of my Macs tolerate badly scratched CD's, so I avoid using them.;)

It is starting to sound like the scratched CD's are the culprit(s).
I would suggest that you may want to take better care of your CD's or at least try to clean them up with a CD cleaner/restorer to avoid further problems.

It will eventually shut down.....just takes a very, very long time.
At that point when you restart the computer, hold down the Command+Option+O+F keys. At the prompt type "eject cd" (without the quotes) and the CD should come out.
