New iMac here - LOVING the Mighty Mouse

I liked it too, then it somehow turned into the biggest POS mouse I've ever used. Apple just can't seem to get it right with their mice.

Good review but i didn't even bother unboxing the MM from my iMac box i just used my V270 until a picked up an MX Revolution. I just cant stand that mouse and if i were to guess i'd say Steve J and probably majority of the Apple staff don't use a MM at home or even at work.

I have the white and stylish bluetooth egg for three months now and I like it although I have rather big hands. It is very smooth to handle without efforts (matching perfectly the MBP's keyboard) and it's very precise and respondable working on almost all surfaces (even wrinkly clothes) except glass. I am using the third-party software Smart Scroll X for the Super Wheel/Coasting adjustments and SteerMouse to get the back function in all applications on the wheel (middle) button.

There was two times something disturbing in the wheel ball - a tiny crumb or something like this - but after a little soft scrolling in all directions and shaking the mouse those disturbances were gone after a minute.

The first batteries did last for six weeks - more than twice the time of my old Microsoft wireless mouse! I had to replace the batteries within one hour after the first warnings appeared in the menu bar because they were completely empty and OS X told me "lost connection". Now I have the warnings since last friday (red battery symbol in the system profiler) but the egg in my hand is working flawlessly.

What's the point of having a ball on the mouse if it only scrolls up and down? A pointing device you can't open and clean? Pointless! Besides, I've hated the damn little rodents since I first laid eyes on one 20 years ago and switched to track balls as soon as they became available.

I tried an ADB Wacom tablet on an earlier machine for photo editing but found the track ball easier to use for it too. The Kensington driver has a nice feature which changes the speed allowing very slow movement for precise work such as retouching but at the same time allowing me to traverse even the huge 24" with roll of the ball. The current driver still supports my ancient model which sports the old G3 color scheme. Like any ball device it gets scuzzy after a few months use, but removing four screws is all it takes to get inside and give it a good cleaning.

I'd love to see someone make a track ball matching the new KB that would just plug into the side USB connector and look like a seamless connection. A similarly designed touchpad device would be a nice option also.

I also prefer trackballs but I haven't been able to find a good one. I've tried all of the ones currently available but none of them was to my liking.
I really wish Logitech would start making Trackman Marble FX again. It's the most comfortable pointing device I've ever used. But the leftclick button died on mine after 8 years and I've been trying to get along with mice but they just give me wrist pain.

Add me to the group who hates the Mighty Mouse. I thought the previous Mac mice were bad, but this one is the worst pointing device I have ever used.

As a replacement, I use a Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000. Those of you with new AL iMacs will like this silver mouse. This is the mouse Apple should have included with the iMac. Very smooth, non-click wheel and overall excellent ergonomic appeal.

I've owned my iMac + MM for less than a year and already I cannot stand it. Ive switched to a Logitech that I used on the PC. My gosh those things cant even last 10 months!

Color Coordination....

Checked the Kensington site and found they have a new model Orbit ball in grey and black for only $29 so I ordered one. Found a coupon code via a search which yielded free shipping... Not a perfect match to the new KB, but close than the clear / green G3 motif... 🙂

It's an OK trackball I think, but the lack of features turned me away. There's not even a scroll function on it.
I was trying out the optical expert mouse as well, and it had great features but it felt very cheap overall, especially the scroll wheel. Certainly not what I expected for that kind of money.

I will write a letter to logitech begging them to come out with a new Marble FX. Not that I think they would care 🙂
Their current trackballs are really lousy.

FYI - You can program the Orbit in Mouseworks so if you chord both buttons the ball will scroll the page. Chord again to revert to cursor control.

The thing is that I "need" more than two buttons, four is a minimum but I would be able to get by with three. And I didn't really get along well with the two-button-scroll. But to each his own.

I have two pretty expensive mice right now, and they are wonderful in features but they give me wrist pains. If I don't get used to them soon I will have to find something else.
I do use a Wacom Intuos for graphics work though and that's a relief, but it doesn't work as a mouse replacement when doing other things.

By the way, I noticed the old Studio Display in that picture. I didn't recognize it at first, but then I remembered that they made those for a short period. When was it? 7 years ago?
I've never seen one in real life though. I bet they are fairly rare these days?

I got it with the G4 400 AGP in 2001. I liked it because the video and power are supplied from a single cord connected to the video and it has a built-in calibration. You just open the monitors control panel, hit "calibrate" and sit back while it does it.

i've used macs about 16 years, always used the one button mouse and the option key for right clicks.

just got a new imac two weeks ago... having a 3 button mighty mouse was only a little weird to get use to, since i've been using a 3 button mouse with scroll wheel on the dell pc at work.

now, I don't think i'd ever go back to a one button mouse.

the mighty mouse is cool.

I've used the MM since it was released a couple years ago. Love it. It also looks decent unlike some of those horrifying things I see made by other companies. 🙂

Glad to see this sparked a fair amount of dialogue. Simply reinforces it is a matter of taste.

I have since purchased a Wireless MM for my MBP no and have discovered that I prefer the wired version to the Bluetooth one... just a different tracking feel.....odd

Oh and another observation. The wired version is optical, while the bluetooth version is laser. Meaning the Wirless "should" track better on a greater variety of surfaces. poppycock

Actually, I thought I would hate the Mighty Mouse and have it replaced by now, but I have decided to give it more time. It is quite comfortable in my hand (more to do with hand size, I think) and I love the little scroll ball, it works really well. OS X allows lots of configuration flexibility, and the mouse is very reliable (so far). I do have two issues:

1. When I use the mouse on my favorite mouse pad, it "jumps" all over the screen. I have to use it on my blank (non patterened) desktop to get it to track properly.
2. I have found that on the 24" screen at 1920 x 1280 resolution, it simply doesn't move far enough. Even with the sensitivity turned all the way up. I'm constantly picking it up to re-position it.

Down the road I will likely replace it with a good gaming class laser mouse.

Went to check the order status only to find it was already on my front porch! I just ordered it yesterday. Not bad for free shipping 🙂

It's much smoother than my old roller style Orbit. The black / silver color scheme isn't an exact match to the new KB, but better than G3 green...
