Hi all - I have the upper end store config model (orig 2799) and I use it mostly as a desktop but for the times I need a laptop I’m glad to have it. I have the fan noise issue and since I teach and spend most of my time on zoom or teams, it gets quite annoying. I’m considering selling and getting the new iMac - debating between the 2 upper models and add my own ram) -

Im not great with specs - how do these systems compare ?

Thanks

I'm also debating between the new imac and a 16 inch macbook pro. I would look at storage first since not all the models have upgradeable storage. If you are using this for web-calls, then either base model processor should be fine.

The thing about comparing these systems is that depending on your use case, you may not notice the difference. So unless you are doing more intensive tasks such as photo or video editing, then you most likely would be fine with the base middle option and adding your own ram to 16 or 32 gb.

Thanks! I know its tough to compare... portability comes with trade offs :) I need the MacBook Pro at least a few trips a year when I travel to teach... but I was sick of the Fan Noise and heat during Zoom and Meetings while using a second Monitor so I did the totally unreasonable thing and Bought the iMac! (mid tier and purchased extra RAM from OWC) - I will keep the Pro... or maybe sell it (I have 30 days) and see what comes down the pike rumor wise for a simpler portable

Thanks again!

Yeah, it seems like the thermals is what's keeping the 16 inch from being truly great. How do you like the imac so far, assuming you already have it? I have a 16 inch coming in and I'm thinking my options are to downgrade to the 13 inch if the heat becomes an issue since I need the portability.

I have had a 16” MBP for 9 months and the fan has been inaudible in general use. The only time I’ve really heard it was when playing a game. I am sensitive to fan noise, and I am really happy with it

Hi honcho, do you have the 16" MBP hooked to external display or just by using its own screen?

I am using the built-in screen. When I play a game, I hook it up to a TV. When I do so, the fans ramp up over time.

EDIT: Double post. My bad
