Because the 21.5" model is using 2.5" HDDs. There's no 3GB 2.5" HDD available currently.
Gamer Model
Well if you have an interest in gaming, then you have to buy the top of the line to get the good best graphics card. Since Fusion drive is a must as well, then you are looking at $2399. That's a good chunk of change for a desktop in this day and age. And I think in practice you have to buy an external DVD player if you don't have something around the house that you can use. So I would tack on another $100. I don't exactly recall, but I feel like I spent less a year and half ago. I think I was able to just get the top end iMac for $1999 and that had the top end graphics card (though only the 1GB version). SSD didn't seem to make sense to me at the price back then since I would also need additional HD storage. It would be pricier for me to get what I would want on this generation if I were in the market.

The real question is, why no fusion drive in the $1,299 model?
The 1499 model has it, which is the same except for the processor and graphic card. So if you want the fusion drive, they FORCE you to get the processor and graphic card upgrade. Pure economic ******** calculations just because they think it will make them more money. They are really letting "the ties" making decisions more and more.
They can't tell me you need the 2.9 Ghz processor for the SSD to work...

the fusion drive can uncoupled to be made into a standalone SSD and a separate HDD with a little terminal fiddling.
Fusion is just the SSD and HDD working together as a consolidated storage medium, TBH id take Fusion over the separates any day, i just wish apple would enable TRIM and Fusion support on the older macs.

I own a 2010 iMac. I would not buy another one based on what Apple has done to this machine. They have ruined it. No optical drive? Sorry, I use one. And am NOT going to live my live buying everything form iTunes. No self RAM upgrades on 21 inch model? This is just greed and theft by Apple. It is THIN on the side. So what!? It is still "fat" in the back and the old one was not fat.
No Firewire? SD card reader impossible to find in the back?
In short, Apple has just signed the death warrant for the iMac.

they do similar things with their macbook lineup. They without certain upgrades for the "higher end" version

I've got the budget for either a 21.5" with better processor, or 16Gb memory or fusion drive. Just one extra. Which will give me more bang for my pennies?

Tell me about it.. I have a nice $2566 (w/ tax) system sitting in my cart. Unfortunately, I've had home repairs go about $3000 over budget, and that was before my water service line sprung a leak.........

$1300 for a desktop with a 21.5 inch monitor, 1 TB 5400 RPM drive and non-user upgradable RAM. Sigh, I am not THAT much of a sheep Apple.

I am not purchasing this iMac but if I was to (Australian dollars):
1. My 2011 iMac 21.5 with i7 cost me $1800 roughly.
2. If I was to get the 21.5 (high end) I'd need/want:
3.1ghz i7, 16GB ram preinstalled, 1TB fusion drive, superdrive
Total cost: $2567
3. If I was to get the 27 (high end) I'd need/want:
3.4ghz i7, NVIDIA 680MX 2GB, 1TB HDD, 8GB ram (will buy more 3rd party later)
Total cost: $2677
So the difference in cost for my wants/needs for 21.5 vs 27 is $110. If I opted for the standard cpu in the 27 iMac, that'd make the 27 cheaper then the 21.5 for me. So hmmm, this round of iMacs are really mot cheap at all. Tough to get a decent BTO order for under $2000 anymore.

My guess would be because boot camp uses mbr partitioning, which only goes up to 2TB.
I debated the 21.5 versus 27. The bigger size and resolution is very tempting, but I ended up deciding on the 21.5. I lug my iMac to my friend's house relatively often for LAN games. My current iMac is 20 lbs and is a bit of a beast to lug. The 27" is the same weight but even bigger beast. The 21.5 is 12 lbs which seems much nicer for semi-regular portability.
Does anybody have any idea whether or not you're able to get an iMac with a fusion drive in the stores themselves? It's not one of their stock options online obviously.
