Since the new MacBooks can use six, obviously the new iMac will unofficially take six.

It says 4GB in Apples site so...
It depends of the motherboard, if it supports more than 4GB (6 or 8) it'll be possible to have more ram.

Is it true that the late 2008 iMac handles 6Gb?

There is no late 2008 iMac...

Mac Pro is the only Mac which can use more than 4GB of RAM
