Apple's next iMac has reached an "advanced stage of development," according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In his newsletter today, Gurman said the new iMac will have the same 24-inch display size and color options as the current model.

The new iMac will likely include Apple's upcoming M3 chip, internal design changes, and a new manufacturing process for the stand, according to Gurman. The M3 chip will reportedly be manufactured based on Apple chipmaking partner TSMC's latest 3nm process for additional performance and power efficiency improvements.

Apple last updated the iMac in April 2021 with the M1 chip and an ultra-thin enclosure available in seven colors, including green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver. It is currently the only iMac in Apple's lineup, as the Intel-based 27-inch iMac and iMac Pro were both discontinued within the past two years. Gurman previously claimed that a larger iMac could return, but he did not share any new info about that possibility today.

Gurman expects the new iMac to be released in the second half of 2023 at the earliest.

32 inch would have been such a breath of fresh air. But I guess the fear of cannibalizing other product lines is now a thing at Apple. Selling performance these days is a tough cookie when the latest version is just a spec bump and doesn’t look any different from the models it replaces.

Look at the M2 Pro/Max versus the M1. I think this is gonna have some impact on upgrade decisions.

The juicier rumor he mentions is the one about an updated 13" Macbook Air...that would mean an M3 Air, which in turn means both the 13" and the new 15" Air are getting the M3 right away...now, would Apple debut TSMC's 3nm process in July on the M3 Airs, two months before the 3nm A17 in the iPhone 15 Pro? Stranger things have happened...TSMC has been mass-producing 3nm wafers for two months now, and we know Apple booked 100% of the initial capacity...so there could be thousands of M3 chips built already and ready to be installed in the new 13" and 15" Airs..

So they want to launch an M3 iMac after a M2 Mac Pro??
Obviously, just like they launched the M2 chip three months after announcing the Mac Studio.
Seeing as the biggest most powerful chips are usually updated last, it makes sense they come right before the first and smallest of the next generation.
The M3Ultra will also more than likely be announced two or three months before the first M4 chips.

Or, what’s more likely in my opinion, is that the 13 inch MacBook Air he’s referring to in his report is just the current M2 model with a $200 price cut so it starts at $999.
That happened last time they re-designed the MacBook Air as well, introduced at $1199 in October 2018, lowered to 999 nine months later in July 2019.
Maybe they’llAdd Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 as well to have feature parity with the 15 inch, in 2019 when they lowered the price the only thing they updated on the computer was giving it a truetone display.

The new iMac will launch when Apple retires the lightening ports everywhere. USB-C Magic Mouse, USB-C Magic Trackpad, USB-C keyboard.

We know the definite move when it comes to the fate of the lightening port is the iPhone 15.
Sometimes I wish Apple had completely got rid of lightning ports (all at once) when Apple first introduce the USB-C port. It looks so tacky that we have different charging cables for Apple's own products.

I'll never understand why they updated all the other entry-level computers, but are delaying this one for so long.

And then there's the rumors that the Mac Studio will "skip" M2 so it doesn't compete with the Mac Pro. So next year the Mac Pro will be advanced enough that the Mac Studio won't compete with it or are they just going to discontinue the Mac Studio?

I wonder if it'll get the Pro version of the M series chip. I miss my M1 iMac. It was the best looking Mac I've owned and the screen was outstanding!... That screen ruined me 🤣

Not gonna happen now there is the Mac Studio and 27” Studio Display.

Could happen but not as people are probably imagining with great-value pricing.

Take 27" Studio Display and insert MBpro Mac tech guts sans MBpro screen. Price accordingly. Apple has already established the old iMac 27" starting-at price for monitor alone. So add a lot of the MBpro price to that and they could roll out the iMac "bigger" that many seem to want... though I suspect much of the want is the value pricing of big screen plus whole Mac for "starting at" about Studio Display (alone) pricing now. That (former pricing) is what is "not gonna happen" in an iMac "bigger" re-launch.

Hmmm. The lack of a 27” would probably kill this update for me.
Also, for what an iMac is mostly used for, I would consider a heavily discounted refurb M1 model up-specced, if the design and screen are the same. (No doubt because the cost of the new one will be extortionate like the new MacBook M2 Pros are compared to their M1 Pro’s .)

The M2 Pro CPU was also a lacklustre upgrade to the M1 Pro from the benchmarks I saw. Not sure the M3 will be a huge improvement either. And certainly not if they hike the cost/keep the same design. Especially in Europe / UK.
