Hi Weaselboy,

I'm running Lion OSX 10.9.1. I agree that the reinstall seems like the way to go now.

For that reason yesterday i did an OSX reinstall but to my surprise nothing really happened. I expected to lose everything and to be starting from scratch again but basically i'm looking at the same desktop, same applications and bookmarks that were there before the reinstall. Perhaps this is normal but whenever i do that with Windows everything is lost.

Since reinstalling it seems like some things are better but i can't say it feels like the speed and reactivity of a new mac... there must still be some serious problems that the reinstall did NOT fix. Perhaps I needed to do an erase and reinstall.

I'm also wondering whether it was only a Maverick reinstall and not a thorough operating system reinstall... could that be why nothing appeared to change after having done the 'reinstall'?

I've included the console report which still details a heap of errors etc ... all of which i cannot decipher.
http://pastebin.com/D55WRENz

As always your feedback and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you just reinstalled over top of the existing install and that is not what you want. Like you noticed, that leaves everything (problems and all) right where they were.

What you want to do is erase the drive and then reinstall. This will give you nothing but a clean slate with OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 on there.

To do that, do a command-r boot to recovery and start Disk Utility, then erase Macintosh HD. Then quit Disk Utility and click reinstall OS. This will take a bit because the 5GB OS needs to download from Apple's servers.

Before you do this, make sure you have a good backup.

When the install is done, go ahead and setup an account for yourself but DO NOT use the import utility to import your data like you did before. If you do, that will bring in all the problems you had.

Once your new account is setup, you will need to manually reinstall your apps and also manually move over your data by manually copying for example your documents folder over.

Don't reinstall any system modification or utility apps like you did before at all.

I just noticed the app Warp in the logs also. That and things like that Espionage I suspect is what lead to your troubles.

Thanks again Weaselboy, i do really appreciate you walking me through this problem/sollution.

Later today i'll get started on the erase and install... i'll let you know how i go with that.

Thanks again mate

Ok so i did the full erase and reinstall, it has totally wiped everything back to a factory install, in fact heaps of things look different and newer than it did after the original migration which seemed to be a hybrid of the old and new operating system.

This has created an other drama for me which can be found here but overall i'm very happy with the result... now i just need to reinstall everything manually.

Thanks for your help with this peeps, especially Weaselboy ;)

Ordinarily, I would discourage a wipe and reinstall, but in this case you have so much odd stuff installed on there, this may be the best way to go to ensure everything is gone.

What OS X version are you on now?

Hi Weaselboy, could you have a look at my console messages and tell me if I have a problem? I recently migrated from a 2007 Macbook Pro to a late 2012 iMac "21.5 and I'm having some of the same issues, mostly just running a bit slow. I was going to delete all the PC Apps in app cleaner, but it seems like app cleaner pulls up files that are still in use from later versions of the PC apps. Do you have time for some advice?

Running OSX 10.8.5

Thanks

Sure. Run the app Etrecheck and post up the report form then app so we can see what you have running.

Also, try starting once if safe mode by holding the shift key when you boot. That stops any startup or logon items from running and will tell us if that is the issue. Do things work better in safe mode?

What exact issues are you having?

Post up with this info and I'll try and help you out. :)

Thanks! I'll post the report below.
My iMac seems to run with the same slow down issues as my '07 MacBook Pro did. Obviously because of the migration. Even when it's running decent, I can still feel the relation to the old mac.

In general it runs slow, sometimes more than others, lags on App launches, even selecting desktop items and previewing them with the space bar lags at times.
The performance is inconsistent.
It ran poorly in safe mode. I spoke with Apple, twice.
Have gotten rid of 'log in' items and a few other minor things, but not sure how much this helped.

The 'Disk Speed Test' shows the mbs fluctuating a lot up to 86, down to 50, up to 72, down to 0, back to 20, 30, 65, etc... At the moment it's staying steady, so maybe some of the launch items that were removed helped.
I have to leave in a few minutes so I won't be able to do much else now.
Thanks again for having a look at this, I really appreciate it!

Did you see my last post?

I am so sorry. I totally missed your post.

It looks like maybe you ran Etrecheck while in safe mode? Because none of the drivers there are loaded. Restart to normal mode then run Etrecheck again and post the results.

It almost sounds a bit like a failing hard drive. Are you seeing symptoms like say you launch Safari and it takes forever to start up... that sort of thing?

That's okay, I've been quite busy as well.
No, I didn't run EtreCheck in safe mode, but here's the report again.
I'm pretty sure it's not a failing hard drive. It just seems to have inherited some performance glitches from the migration.(From 07 MacBook Pro)
Also, the console has all kinds of stuff happening while the computer is asleep, but not constantly. Sometimes activity just starts(in the console) and continues for hours. The log in screen pops up occasionally when it's sleeping as well.
Thanks again.
PS Let me know if you want to see some lines from the console.

You do have a bunch of third party drivers on there, but very few are loaded, to they should not cause trouble. One that is loaded that often causes trouble is Soundflower. I would get rid of that.

Thing is, if you are saying this overall slowdown still occurs in safe mode, then it can't be any of these third party drivers or plugins since a safe mode boot bypasses all of those. That part about it even being really slow when you hit the space bar and the really slow launch times does sound like a failing hard drive.

Thanks for the Soundflower thing.
What do you think about all the console activity while the computer is sleeping? Or that the log in screen shows up sometimes while it's in sleep mode?

Thanks again for the help!

Some of that Console activity might be Powernap. Do you have that turned on?

http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT5394

So it is a asleep and the screen just comes on at the login screen for no reason?

Yes, it just pops up from a black screen all of the sudden, but not all the time. It only happens on some days just recently. That's when I looked at the console and saw all this continued activity through out the night while the computer is asleep...
