no i didn't prove his point

his rhetorical question was how do you get 32GB inside an iMac. i gave him the answer. simple as that
i never said 2x16gb. all i said was, can you have more than 16GB of total installed ram inside an iMac, and I said yes. what are you thinking?

iMac 21.5' only have two slots http://www.kodawarisan.com/k2012_02/archives/2012/11/aa_imac_aeaaa.html , which is a drawback since previous Unibody iMacs all have four, regardless of 21.5'/27'. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac_(Intel-based)#Unibody_iMac
That's why there's no 32G RAM configuration for 21.5' iMac in Apple Store.

Gotta love the new iMac design.

Does it make the iMac less tall? No. (Limited by the screen height)
Does it make the iMac less wide? No. (Limited by the screen width)
Does it improve the iMac depth wise? No. (Limited by the stand)

Does it improve thermals? No. (Slightly less heat dissipated in a lot less volume)

Did Apple take away features? Yes. (Super Drive replaced with an internal plastic wedge).

Way to innovate, Apple.

trust me, when you see it in real life you'll think the old ones take up too much space, are too heavy looking and dominant. you'll forget about the dimensions, the lack of superdrives and whatnot simply because of its tiny visual volume and its divine presence.

Just placed my order. Hopefully it arrives before Christmas

27-inch iMac
Dispatches in 2 - 3 Weeks
Delivers 20/12/2012 - 24/12/2012 by Standard Shipping
Part Number: Z0MS
With the following configuration:
•3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
•8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
•1TB Fusion Drive
•NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5
•Magic Trackpad

Exactly what i would love, but i really dont know if i need the i7 and i am not that fussed about fusion (as i will need to be doing a bit of bootcamp anyway), i am probably going to order after Christmas, but that may change in the next 24 hours!

While it is a price increase for the entry level 21.5" vs. the old price of $1199, that does come with an additional 500GB and 4GB of RAM for the $100 (previous model 4/500GB, this model 8/1TB).

Seems like a reasonable decent [in Apple-land at least...] bump in capacity vs. the cost (not factoring in the removal of anything else).

:)

Yeah, it doesn't really surprise me that the price rise happened, but it also hasn't come with any obvious additional benefit to the consumer and exists only maintain the profit margin.

The capacity bump would have happened naturally as part of technology moving forward, but it is appreciated that even the base model comes with 8GB and strange that the RAM and HDD are the same across all the models.

if you REALLY need to save $20 (which is baffling since you're considering the latest gen iMAc), use remote disc. I'm sure you have a computer with a cd drive somewhere.

So I would need to buy an imac AND have a second computer hanging around somewhere just in case?

You're actually backing the opposing point as well - if you are spending the kind of money necessary for a latest generation imac, I shouldn't have to spend an extra £20.

I just saw the 21.5" and I must say while it looks good I wasn't blown away, from a users POV it looks just like the last model.

I guess it's like owning a great looking car, from inside you can't appreciate it as much

It is probably more precisely "No, not right now". With 16GB so-DIMMs you probably can. There's just aren't appropriate 16GB so-DIMMs on the market right now. In 2 years, there probably will be. Just like how Apple's specs said 2011 couldn't go to 32GB but several 3rd party kits do (with 8GB so-DIMMs).

So anyone who selected 8GB now, could in a couple of years jump to 32GB for probably as much money at Apple wants for the 16GB now ($200 ).

That is not going to be possible.

@Side view: Doesn't look so thin now, does it?

I would prefer thicker edge with flat back. That bulge is mildly hideous.

Is the imac lighter? YES(by about 33% for the 27" model), this may not mean much to you, but guess what, an optical drive doesn't mean much to me. Some people move their imacs around quite a bit.

Is it quieter? That one remains to be seen, but since there is no super drive whirring up means you get rid of a potential noise source.

I for one am so happy about this new design, I cannot wait to sell my current imac and get one.

You do know that iMac ≠ MacBook, yes? Why would you buy a desktop computer to move it around?

1. you don't want to pay an extra $20 for external drive, despite paying the "apple tax" for an apple product
2. you don't want to use second computer to access a disc even though it's rare that you do.
3. you want a redesigned brand new iMac without paying extra cash

ugh complain all day. whatever dude, I'm glad Apple decided to remove the superdrive.

don't care if it gives the best hand job on the planet, if ya can't easily swap memory and hd, its a dog

It wasn't actually complaining. It was however pointing out that as I'm planning to spend around £1800 on a computer I shouldn't have to start thinking 'what else do i need'.

A comparison might be if the new imac only came a 250GB hard drive. You can always buy external storage, but that isn't the point.

To come back to your points:
1. I'm already paying the higher price for an iMac, why should I have to pay more on top
2. In my case I use dvds daily, it wouldn't be practical to use a second computer
3. Paying for the design is part of the price, redesign is part of a natural product cycle. It's not (always) instigated by higher prices.

Meanwhile, the competition...

A step back

The 5400 rpm HDD in the 21.5" version is really unacceptable and the SD slot located on the back side is going to be very awkward to use.
RAM not user upgradeable in the 21.5" version is another major issue and the very small speakers have very poor low frequency response.

Soldered RAM?

Is it possible the Japanese site is tearing down a 27" sample? I think it is a 21.5" since the 27" logic board would have to be aligned in such a way as to have the RAM slots in the middle of the back. So why not have a RAM cover on the 21.5"? Is it because it couldn't be centered in the smaller chassis?

An why is the power supply below the hard drive? That makes me nervous.

Also, the iMac is using socket 1155 intel chips.

Notice in the iFixIt teardown ... the SSD socket is not included on the motherboard on HD only models!

No opportunity to add a SSD later if desired ... even if you are willing to cut the adhesive tape holding it all together.
