You know, perhaps a big school system bought a large amount of iMacs. That would push back ship times for the rest of us, too.

Makes more sense than Apple pushing in an iMac update before Powermacs. 😉

If it was THAT large, you would've heard about it lol. A few hundred iMac purchases by a school barely touch inventory. Apple sells millions of computers. Even a thousand is a small #.

just read that someone in the uk ordered an iMac on 2/20 and it has been shipped. take that for what you will about the iMac being updated.

Where'd you hear about that? And does that mean that you'll be getting your iMac then?

iMac G5 evidences

Major problems:

- Fan noise in "Fast" mode and slower than mac mini in "Automatic" mode
(http://www.macintouch.com/perfpack/comparison.html);
- Prices must be comparable with mac mini + cinema display 20" ($ 1499); more penetration means more customers in software and services (Tiger, iWorks, Music Store, .Mac, iLife '06) where they can gain major profits.

Minor problems:

- Optional bluetooth and wireless keyboard and mouse not in line with the philosophy that inspires who buy an all-in-one desktop;
- Graphic card performance.

RESULTS

All models
- external power supply
- bluetooth 2.0
- wireless keyboard and mouse

$ 1.099 iMac G5 17" 1.6
- 64 MB graphic card
- 256 MB ram
- combo drive

$ 1.399 iMac G5 17" 1.8
- 128 MB graphic card
- 512 MB ram
- superdrive 8x

$ 1.699 iMac G5 20" 1.8
- 128 MB graphic card
- 512 MB ram
- superdrive 8x

Rediculous. Apple didn't introduce the Mini so that they could force their own hand on iMac prices. If the Mini is too good then they can just let it age while they add features to the iMac.

vitinho's model is wrong, but i do agree with removing the power supply and using a brick. where is the 2.0 G5??? they could move some models down in pricing but faster cpu's are coming. GPU is a major problem not Minor problem for most consumers since what you get is what you get. Apple isnt going to make the wireless keyboard standard. A lot of people dont mind a wire and dont want to be bothered with batteries. Consumers are gamers figure this out everyone. Apple is almost getting this but it has taken years. A $1500 - $2000 iMac should be able to outgame a $150 Xbox period. Tiger will have the new drivers and i hope we see the new GPU's from Apple soon. FX5200 just doesnt cut it anymore and is the one sore spot on a Beautiful machine. A little polish,a decent GPU and this machine is near perfect except for the Pod styling. 🙄

somebody posted it in the discussions at apple. my iMac is still supposed to ship on or before 3/2

Some

I don't mind about processor and I agree we will find 1.8 and 2 ghz processors in new iMac but my opinion is based on daily use of the 1.6 model.

Why to have the illusion to acquire a 2 ghz if it must be uses to half of the performances (in "automatic" mode)? I hope in a ghz upgrade only if they really solve the noise problem. Remember that with iMac you have the computer on your face.

Looking just a bit foreward, the ideal solution for wireless should be keyboard and mouse rechargeable via usb connection. The only great advantage of an iMac compared with mac mini + display is the design and easy to use of a wireless solution.

Mac mini is a milestone for the computer evolution. For the first time a computer bases its success on the knowledge that a year ago processor is good for 99% of conventional tasks and focalizing on other features.

So I think that iMac can follow this epochal tacking.

Refresh hopeful

I've got my fingers crossed for some kind of refresh this week. When it happens I'll be right there ready to buy in. I'm hoping for a base RAM bump to 512, maybe a speed bump to 2.0 on the high end, and perhaps a GPU upgrade. Personally, the GPU isn't all that important to me since I don't play many games, but it'd be nice to have something a little better.

It seems like, just from monitoring Apple's own discussion forums, that a lot of people are getting unexplained shipping delays (past 3-5 business days) when there was previously a very steady flow. Since we're outside of the holiday shopping season I don't know if such a hiccup can be easily explained away.

It's worth noting that the eMac and iMac pages haven't been updated to reflect that they're shipping with iLife '05 pre-installed, whereas the iBook product page has (recently? I thought last time I looked it wasn't). Why update the iBook page but not the iMac or eMac pages, unless larger updates to those pages were close at hand?

Cool theory. Got my fingers crossed for the imac update 😎 . I hope it come within weeks rather than months.

Remove the internal power supply and get rid of the white space underneath the LCD.

I doubt that there going to be doing that this late in the game. But then again, this is Apple, so you never know.

Actually the eMac page has been updated to show iLife '05. The only ones that don't are the iBooks, iMacs, and PowerMacs.

This sort of makes sense to me. The PowerBooks and Mini's have been updated (or announced for the mini) since iLife '05 came out, so you'd expect them to say '05 is included. The eMac probably won't be upgraded, so they went ahead and updated the page to show '05 (I don't know if the eMac will be killed, but Apple will probably want to hold off on updating it to see if the mini takes off as a replacement).

The iBook is 27 days away from it's average update, the iMac is 13 days away, and the PowerMac is a lovely 87 days PAST it's average update. So this gives pretty good reason to believe that the pages haven't been updated to show iLife '05 because they're getting ready to update them for the next revision of computers. However, this says nothing about exactly how long we'll have to wait...

Actually, you're right -- the eMac page in the store says it comes with iLife '05. But this one doesn't -- it says '04. Whereas the iBook software page says iLife '05. The iMac page also says it comes with '04. Maybe it doesn't mean anything, but I find it strange that we're over a month since iLife '05 started shipping and the software page of their top-selling consumer model (before the Mini, that is) still says it's shipping with iLife '04.

Where's my iMac?

It's interesting to me that there is this discussion. I bought an iMac on 2/16 that hasn't been shipped, along with some software and asked that it be shipped together. So, a couple days later I got the software. Just today Apple has asked if I want to cancel the rest of the order. Any advice?

So they're asking if you want to cancel the iMac, right? That could be a good idea if you want to get a Rev B sometime soon for the same price as the Rev A you ordered.

Hope so. 😀 In fact, I'm REALLY hoping, but not getting my hopes up just in case. 😉 I have a feeling it'll happen though...

*Debit card in hand...* *Ready to place order as soon as new ones are announced.*

I think that the design of the iMac is just fine now. Updates are a good thing. If there is an update coming tomorrow, surprised that Think Secret doesn't have a story. Unless TS has been hurt by the lawsuit.

I found out this was due to a government rule (so I was quoted) that mandates after x delays in shipping a product they have to ask the user if they want to cancel the order. No clue on the truth of it, but that is what I was told.

that's correct. the email apple sent me contained this:

"If we do not hear from you or we cannot ship your order by the revised date above, we are required by federal law to cancel your order and issue a prompt refund, and we will do so."

someone on the apple boards got their iMac today, and they ordered on 2/4. i dont really know what to think about an update coming as soon as tomorrow. it seems awfully quiet. however it is kind of funny how most of the recent orders have had shipping dates extended until 3/1 or 3/2 and the wait in the online store has now went to 1-3 days.

OK,
Just a theory here, but bear with me.

IF there is an update this week, then the delay was due to the update(obviously right.......)

IF there is NO update, and they start to ship from orders placed weeks ago, this this is my theory.

Apple has had quite few issues with the screens flickering, and with the midplane being replaced due to fan noise and the HD is not performing up to its 7200RPM specs. These are ALL documented and talked about on here, so no flameing please 😱

Perhaps Apple put in a large order of NEW fans and different screens and "Fixed" the glitches. They would'nt publicize them, due to every Tom, Dick and Harry would want a refund and replacement. Furthermore, those that had issued they probalby have addressed and the remainder are just fine and no need to cause a stir.

So maybe the new iMac's rolling off the assembly line are "updated" just not in the CPU, GPU and RAM department, but are updated in the Screen, FAN/HEAT and HD departments..........?

Just a theory.

Thats a good theory Trout! It makes sense to me.

I just hope they update them before May because that is when I plan to purchase my 20".
