After looking at the new MacBook Pros, I'm excited about what it could mean for the iMac. New processors are going to come. What I'm very excited about is the NVIDIA 512MB graphics card in the MBP that could make it into the iMac. Hopefully Apple will update the iMac soon. Maybe even a new screen size.

Yeah, I'm psyched, too... I was *finally* going to pick up a new 2.8ghz iMac 24" this weekend (well, order it online, anyway...) after having my PowerBook 12" as my main computer for the past couple years... but now I'm thinking I'll continue to hold off for an update *crosses fingers* The graphics card is the main thing... that NVIDIA card is *sweeeeeet* :D

I hope to see an update to the iMac line soon...
A better GPU is really the only thing that i want. ;)
What strikes me as a possible sign for an iMac update is that there seem to be a lot of iMacs in the refurb store and they all have this "Limited Time Special Price" Tag... so maybe they want to get rid of the old models? *crosses his fingers* :D

Ah well... all this is of course wild speculation... :D

See, I disagree. That nvidia card isn't sweet. It's the 3rd rated card out of 4 they sell for laptops. Now obviously the 8800M GTX isn't ever going to go into a pro, because they're thin to properly ventilate it. But in an iMac? Very much so, especially the 24". Doubtful you'll ever see it though. Steve wouldn't want to hurt his margins. I predict we'll be stuck with the ATI card for a very long time. Apple has a knack for buying up and using the hardware no one else wants (a la combo drives).

So, what are the chances that next Tuesday is the iMac's turn for an update?
Anyone know if Apple will continue the Tuesday update trend?

    better update soon

They better update soon, heck the macbook is now considerably better/faster than the standard fare imac, that should not be. The macbook comes with more RAM and a better processor and is cheaper.

I predict imac updates very soon, though it wont benefit me........as I allready own one.

The Macbooks graphics are shared with the main memory, so in those aspects, the new Macbooks are not faster.

Graphics cards aside, I do agree with the person you're responding to... there is something inherently wrong about their lowest end consumer laptop having a faster processor speed than one of their desktops. So to that end, I agree that iMacs are probably the next model to get updated.

And also, to argue your point, it would depend on the task the two computers are running. Obviously on a more graphics intensive test (video rendering, perhaps), the iMac would win. Processor speed is something completely different, however.

The iMac isn't a desktop though. It is made out of laptop components. I see what you're saying, but the iMac is essentially a laptop you can't lug around that is spec'ed somewhere in between the Macbook and Pro. I'm quite disappointed to see the MBP has a better vid card than the iMac though.

I just bought one last weekend. If they update it, they update it. Either way I'll be happy with my machine (outdated or not).

The 9600GT is a good performer, unlike the 8600.

I hope they put the 9600M GT in the iMac next, but who knows when they'll release the component.

What makes you say that? Clearly the components they need for an update are available.

The iMac is a consumer-level machine. It doesn't surprise me at all that it would have similar specs after a big Macbook update. The Buyer's Guide says the average time to update for the iMac comes up tomorrow.

I believe the NVIDIA card in the MacBook Pro is the best currently available for laptops/iMacs. I would expect the bottom 20" to possibly upgrade to the 256MB version in the base MBP15". The top of the line 24"iMac should have the 512MB card standard or atleast as a BTO option.

Do you think Apple might move away from ATI because AMD owns them? Maybe Intel is putting some pressure on.

I have the 24" extreme iMac, and it's amazing! Besides the standard updates - processor, graphics, etc. I think Apple could really benefit with a complete redesign, moving away from the current design, and more revolutionary like the G4. Who knows? I really don't see the iMacs being updated until late March, but who knows, these days. They could also throw in a TV Tuner :)
Either way the current iMac is amazing, and I'm definitely sticking by it for a long time, outdated or not, like many said above me^^

According to notebookcheck the 8800m GTX is the fastest non-SLi, non-Quadro, current gen mobile card followed by the 8800m GT then the 8700m GT then the HD2600XT (iMac) then the 8600m GT (MacBook pro) just above the HD2600...

Don't worry, you wont be angry. I bought my iMac in 10/06. and when the new ones came along, I had zero feeling of wanting the new model. But maybe that was because Apple too so damn long to update them lol :D

The Apple Online Store is still open this AM

so I will go out on a limb and predict no iMac upgrades today.
There, I've done it. Now there's sure to be an upgrade today :D
