Firewire

I understand not having firewire on a macbook, but not a Macbook PRO! I own a 2007 MBP and was thinking about upgrading in a couple years, not having firewire completely killed that idea! I was hoping they would finally ADD another firewire port on the PRO models so I can have more space to work with. I am an audio engineer and to me firewire is the greatest invention ever, its not slow like USB and my whole studio gets connected to my MBP over one cable. Without this port I can't use any of my audio interfaces.

Apple you are stupid, you can't call a MBP a Pro model anymore cause so many of the professionals in their fields use firewire, whether it be backing up on externals, or using outboard gear like I do, and you just royally screwed all of us.

we can only hope that if and when they update the iMacs, they do leave the Firewire. Hopefully they will assume correctly that the iMac is not a pure consumer machine, as many Semi-Pros or Pros do use it due to :apple:'s complete lack of a desktop solution between the price and performance points of the iMac and the Mac Pro [cough] Mac Consumer Tower [/cough].

Losing FW on the iMac would mean that people who are even ever so slightly in the realm of :apple:'s definition of "Pro", and therefore use FW, would be forced into buying the Mac Pro, which is both stupidly overpriced for that kind of lower-end but higher than iMac group, not to mention likely a bit overkill performance wise. Needless to say this would cause even more user hate of :apple:, as the price difference between an iMac and a Mac Pro is MUCH larger than between a MB and MBP...

The MacBook Pro has FireWire 800. It is just the MacBook and the Air that doesn't have FireWire in Apple's current lineup.

Dude... You do realize that the MBP still has 1 FW 800 port, don't you? Yes, they crippled the MB, but the Pro line is fine (for now ) Another FW port would be wonderful, perhaps on the new 17" since they have the room?

Looks like I was beat to the punch

I'm in the same boat as most of the audio guys.. If Apple doesnt include firewire on the new iMacs, there's no way in hell I'll be buying one.. My audio interface (Metric Halo 2882 +DSP) is firewire and I dont plan on ditching it any time soon. I know A LOT of audio guys who use the iMacs for running Logic Studio which is an Apple product. It'd be really silly for them to not include it!

+1

I have an M-Audio FireWire Audiophile and its a great bit of kit.

i still don't understand the appeal of an imac....

mac pro yes...but imac...

how is it a better choice over a notebook?

it basically has the same hardware as the notebooks...

im assuming its for people who want less mobility

I bought some frosted flakes today and the guy next to me bought cheerios.

frosted flakes yes...but cheerios...

how is it a better choice over frosted flakes?

it basically has the same nutrients as frosted flakes...

im assuming its for people who want less sugar

See what I did there?

I think we will see a Mac mini update at the same time as the iMac update. "Santa Rosa Special" 1067 MHz FSB...

Sorry, no. Are you implying that less sugar equates to less mobility? Because to me one seems good and the other bad.

Well yeah... If only the MacPro's were lets say... $1000 cheaper? Then factor in a display and it's even more expensive! Believe me, I'd love to own a MacPro but I can't justify the price when the iMac has more than enough power for my situation (running Logic Studio) and the included 24" screen is a nice bonus. I dont use a boatload of CPU hogging audio plugins in Logic Studio. I also like the form factor of the iMac and dont need mobility for my home studio and if i need to do recording in the field, I'll use my MBP.. So for some, yeah, it's a better choice..

well , we've had the iPod event going on (raising awareness) and we had the macbooks a few days back ,.....the thing is , to me the iMacs look ok ,and that's where this rumour starts to go awry for me , I mean the Mini is where it's at, oh , and the MacPro , only that I think the MP is for Macworld .....

It makes sense to me at least for the MM to get an update , now, ...especially while it's almost spending money like a looney season!! ...get your wares on the shelf MrJobs , lets have that new Mini for Christmas , please :)

All these recent events will have surely made all the switchers sit and take notice (again) and turn their noses up at the new MB & MBP for being "too expensive" or whatever ....bring on the new Mini , unibody stylee

edit >..... and then bring the new iMac's , MBP 17" and the Macpro out at MW , total sense to me , the casual switchers with a few hundred in the back pocket during thecoming holiday season will spot down the $£$£$ for a reasonably priced mac , especially with all the recent exposure..., and then the 'more pro' folk will get the meat & potato's in the new year , job done , thanks for listening ..out.

  • Bigger, higher-resolution display
  • Higher specs (CPU)
  • Larger hard drive
iMovie '08 isn't Cocoa?

No - LED Cinema Display came this month (not Spring 2009), and the MacBook Pro got a total redesign this month (not early summer 2009).

The "new computer platform" at MWSF, I think, is quite believable though.

AppleInsider has been accurate so far, so maybe we will see iMacs updated before the holidays and Mac Pros after that.

2008rm-080827.png

One new LED Display came out this month. The existing models were not updated, but likely will later. The original poster also said that MB's and MBP's would be updated this month, but that a total redesign would be in early summer. You could argue that even greater changes to the laptops could come then.

I wish they'd put more USB ports in the imac. I love mine, but that is the only complaint I have. 3 isn't enough for me!

Yeh, that would especially suck. At least if it happened to me, all I'd loose out on is a crappy maudio FW410. Heh. It'd be an excuse to upgrade.

Although, it's still stupid Apple removed Firewire on the Macbooks, as I now think they're a better audio laptop than the pro. Even the new graphics chip will probably handle most audio/video projects.

I'm waiting for snow leopard to upgrade my white 24" iMac. There's still no reason for me to upgrade, the newer models are just a bit faster and I prefer the matte screen anyways.

I want a new iMac 24" with firewire 400 and 800.

If they remove FW 400 or 800 I will not buy a new iMac no matter how cheap they get, I use my firewire ports for my beloved external iSight, I truly hate the built-in iSight with all my guts, it sucks, and an external HD.
