Yay for clinging desperately to the long-outdated all-in-one concept that nobody needs anymore.

I wonder which "unnecessary" features and ports will be removed to make it thinner than paper.

The Xeon E3-1285 v4 came out in Q2 of 2015, the v3 came out in 2013. So this rumor is about two generations past. In that case, v5 should come out in 2017, this year and thus v6 should be out in 2019. Either there is a typo or pie-in-the-sky dreaming.

I never understood why anyone would want or prefer an extremely thin desktop. Its not like people carry them around all the time. The iMacG5/Core2Duo were thin enough IMHO, the latest models are just absurd. Personally, I'd rather get more powerful guts than an unnecessarily thin desktop.

Also, seeing as how Apple's TV plans arent going any where, maybe its time for them to consider something like FrontRow2?

Cheers.
They're beautiful. To some people, it really does matter. Plus it's an engineering challenge. But mostly, they're beautiful. It's nice to take pleasure in the sight of something you have to look at all day. And no, you're not only ever looking at it from the front.

Hopefully they also introduce new mid-range iMacs with kaby lake i5s or i7s and perhaps mid range graphics card like a RX 470 or 480 at a low price point (and by low, I mean between $1500 up to $2000 max). The 27in 5k iMac is already hideously expensive and I can't imagine what adding a Xeon processor, a top of the line Vega GPU and ECC ram will do to the price. I mean I'm all for pro specs like this article seems to indicate for pro users who need this level of hardware, but hopefully they don't forget regular users in the process.
Less than a week ago everyone is worrying that Apple is abandoning professionals, now there's worry that Apple is abandoning consumers. So ironic how quickly that reversed :)

If it's got Xeon processors and 64 gigabytes of RAM it will be far beyond any mainstream (NOT server, NOT self-built enthusiast) computer out there.

would the mac mini use the same shell at the current Mac Pro going what by what the article says...? It's larger and taller etc...

Maybe not so thin. The TDP of a 3.5GHz v4 was 95watts. Just 4 watts hotter than the 3.5GHz Core i5 used in the iMac now.

If I remember well, they've never used laptop CPUs on iMacs. But I didn't say that.
Desktop CPU but mobile GPU in iMacs now

You telling me this isnt beautiful to look at all day?

does anybody know, if you buy a mac with tb3 support, with the new drivers for pascal, can you hook up an eGPU to the next gen imac, or macbook pro and work?
i mean we need something else or all we need is those nvidia drivers and a tb3 mac to use like a charm an 1080?

ok, so this tells me no change in the wide bezel chin case at all and no 6 cores and no nividia. Disappointing on all 3 counts, but I'll still get one.

Should "beautiful" be a concern for "Pros"? IMO - I don't think so. I want a machine that does the job and i'm not concerned about the looks.

A Xeon iMac? I don't know why, but I find it hard to believe Apple wants to stuff a Xeon into a chassis like the iMac. Don't the upper-tier i7-equipped iMacs already struggle with thermal throttling under intense load?

I am assuming that with Apple changing the form factor of both the Mac mini and the IMac Pro, and knowing that the current generation of iMacs suffer from thermal problems that they would change something to try and alleviate this problem on a new model that would generate even more heat.

Welcome to MacRumors, home of the whiniest, most derisive non-Mac and Mac users on the planet. Macrumors, where even positive news about refreshed products with improved performance and features, coupled with beautiful aesthetics are trashed before they see the light of day.
Who would possibly want the most beautifully designed all-in-one desktop featuring incredible performance more than adequate for the majority of consumers and many professionals?
It's awful. Apple should be ashamed. How dare they release new improved iMacs without satisfying 100 % of their loyal fanbase and users.

I think you might be confusing CPUs with GPUs. The amount of thermal heat from CPUs these days is minimal. Unless you're extreme overclocking the CPU, but that activity is typically not synonymous with Mac users.

These long release cycles are getting longer and longer across all product lines...people should stop buying all this stuff so Apple can actually be forced to innovate and be cutting edge

o Intel Xeon E3 processors

Nice to have desktop CPUs in this. Will include desktop-class GPUs as well?

o 16GB to 64GB of ECC RAM

Pretty good. I have a late 2013 rMBP w/ 16 GB of RAM, and it chokes on large Pixelmator files.

o Faster NVMe SSDs

I still think Apple should ditch Fusion & spinning hard drives and go straight NVMe SSDs. Not only are NVMe SSDs have decent capacities now (I've seen 4TB SSDs, not sure if NVMe, in some places), they're also far smaller too, so thinner iMacs! Yay! We know much Apple loves thin.

o Thunderbolt 3

No brainer. if not, this'll be proof that Apple's lost its marbles.

The blog also claims Apple is working on an 8K external display for Apple's "completely rethought" Mac Pro. This isn't a rumor we've heard before, but Apple did confirm it is working on a new Apple-branded pro display of an unspecified resolution. Dell recently launched a 32-inch 8K display for $5,000.

Does TB3 support 8K over a single cable? Looks like HDMI v2.1 does, but I'm not too sure about TB3.

I would also like a new keyboard with touchbar and number pad. Touchbar sounds useful in some situations. Plus, I work with a lot of people who need number pads, as well. I'd prefer USB so I don't have to keep replacing the batteries.

But when you put them in tiny form factors with very basic cooling solutions purely for pleasing pearl clutchers they tend to get a little suffocated and run hot.

If I remember well, they've never used laptop CPUs on iMacs. But I didn't say that.

the 27" iMac retinas are all desktop CPUs
the 21" iMac retina is a LV (65w) mobile part

the 27" iMac uses a Mobile laptop GPU

the 21" non retina was an ultrabook laptop CPU (i5250u, 15w) with an optional upgrade to the quad core mobile CPU (i5-5575R)

the 2014 21" iMac also shipped with a ULV i5-4260U laptop CPU

All 2013 27" iMac's shipped with Desktop CPUs

it's probably this back and forth depending on which model and size that gets people confused. SOME imac's did ship with either the ULV 15w laptop CPU's, Some shipped with the 65 Low voltage mobile CPU and some have shipped with the full desktop variant

Is it just me or this feels like someone making up things based on what most people want to hear?

I do wish I am wrong and Apple goes this way (and I have the money to buy one), but I will not expect any of them to be accurate.

Yep, what people want to hear. And notice: no talk about a presumably much higher price in this article ;-)
But that must be coincidence.
