The static grid of icons does need some sort of change, it's beginning to look a little stale but it ain't happening in iOS 6. Apple seems to be shifting to a schedule that every other update is for refining.

I'll TELL you that's what it is (for me, at least). I'm not bitching about it staying the same but I really would like to see something different. Sure, it's most definitely functional, I love my iPhone but it'd be nice to have a visual overhaul or update.

If all you want is a visual overhaul, what do you want to update? It looks like the title bar changes colors(!?) in iOS 6. They've added folders and notifications and updated the lock screen and the dock. Added background images. What else are you looking for in a "visual overhaul" (not functional)?

Consumers don't want a new UI. They love the intuitive UI found in iOS.

Sounds like a Steve Jobs keynote script.

Only if Apple decides to come up with a refined UI will I agree that it's time for a change. Until then, I think we should stay away from these topics.

So you'll agree with change when someone forces you to change? Sounds like Stockholm Syndrome :p

Nowhere in my post did I that's all I wanted. iOS 6 addresses almost every pet peeve I have about iOS, but that's not what we're here talking about.

I know that. I was asking you a question! :)

You said that a visual overhaul would be nice. I'm asking what you would like to be "visually overhauled." To me, most of the iOS UI is new or has been updated in the last two years.

True, but those updates have been incremental. Widgets, better multitasking for background apps, customizable homescreen (no, wallpaper and rearranging apps do not cut it anymore), customizable - or at least more feature and information packed - lockscreen, general "facelift".

Agreed, some points mentioned may go beyond the level of simplicity Apple desires, but I believe they are all doable with Apple's engineering skills :)

Again, I was asking about a "visual overhaul", not functional changes. Your "general 'facelift'".

we are already seeing signs of a UI in beta 1, first the stores and music app. the phone app.

i think if apple are pushing for a new UI, its something they can keep hidden till GM.

they will do it in a way, that won't cause issues for the developers at all

An idea came to my mind while browsing the forums... iOS 6 was shown off at WWDC and it is a mild update to the current iOS. Many wanted an overdue UI overhaul but apple remained by the same "Slide to unlock" we saw 5 years ago.

My bet is, that the UI overhaul is coming. And here are my thoughts on it:

1. Apple will present this with the new iPhone. With more screen real estate they will offer new UI features for the new iDevice. They will use the momentum to shift the iOS around. New phone = new experience. Updating "old" devices might confuse customers and Apple will not gamble
2. It will be iPhone's major selling point. Apple never hinted at Siri, yet they presented it with the new device
3. I know that the iPad offers more screen space, but this is the time when Apple will bring the new iOS to the new hardware. Last iDevice's updates were incremental, next ones will be big, accompanied by the big iOS software push.

It makes logical sense to do that. Now, we all know that Apple always does what is logical and predictable :)

You know what... I could see Apple doing this.

As long as they fix the notification bar covering buttons such as the "Back" button and anything near the top of the screen. It's annoying when a new notification pops up and it covers those icons mostly and you either wait until it's gone or try and tap back but end up clicking the notification.

This actually happens to me quite a bit. It's annoying.

Try swiping left on the notification. :)

I think they will update iOS UI when the iPhone with a "holographic" screen comes out.

That's my prediction and I'm sticking to it.

I think the argument that people want to have with the current UI is that they want more customization. Which I would welcome, but I'll understand if they don't want to implement more of that kind of stuff. The current UI is simple and easy as hell. What more do you want?

Hardware power can give boosts to the current UI, you know opening and closing apps, restarts ect. But even those are ridiculously fast already.

Not only is your post full of grammar errors and contains wrong usage of the term UI, but the statement doesn't even make sense.

Steve Jobs clearly stated this is the way forward, and how the OS for touch devices should be made (app oriented). We won't see a new UI, just significant enhancements like it's done with OS X.

Ideas or prototypes?

New UI or not, I would love to hear some idea's on what the UI looks like or has?

I have looked at most of the Android launchers and they all have the standard app homescreen icons idea. I agree widgets would be great. But how could Apple really innovate in this area? How could the mobile UX be re-imagined?

Actually, iOS6 updates standard UI elements across the board. The change is subtle, much like it was with Lion, but it does freshen things up. Some apps have more dramatic updates, so things feel inconsistent, so we'll probably see some minor changes before the final comes out, but I don't think anything drastically new is coming.

Or when you're playing a game and it comes up with a notification covering up key elements of the game... Then you lose :(
