Looks like the morons in my class found out about this here bug. Idiots are trying it out. I hope they learn their lessons LOL

Yeah? I bet you didn't try it did you? Ohhh no. ;)

Let's face it - MOST people on this thread will have searched for it and then tried it; I did, and it works; big deal.

Nah. Besides, my iPhone is running iOS 6 so this bug doesnt even affect me :D

But needless to say, their phones crashed.

I'm amazed Apple hasn't pushed an emergency patch for this. What the hell are they doing?

Rushing 8.4.... To deliver more bugs with an early release. And also a way to make sure every iPhone owner updates to 8.4, making it Apples "best" update yet (with over 90% of users upgrading in the first 24hrs)

In all honesty Apple doesn't really give a $&@- about the end user, they have your money and will continue to get your money even if a fix isn't released for a month or more...

There is for example the "Computer Misuse Act" from 1990, which criminalises "unauthorised acts with intent to impair, or with recklessness as to impairing, operation of computer etc.". Now tell me how sending a message that you know will crash an iPhone in a way that is hard to recover from isn't an "unauthorised act with intent to impair, or with recklessness as to impairing, the operation of a computer".

"Prank" and "hacking" are orthogonal concepts, so saying "it's not hacking, it's a prank" is nonsense. "Pranks" that involve the Computer Misuse Act are not something you should get yourself involved in.

The difference is that this _is_ a criminal act, whereas smoking marijuana doesn't actually turn you gay, and most people wouldn't care if it does. But the next time you come up with a strawman argument, think of something more clever.

yeah i am sure the DOJ is getting right on this. i'm being handcuffed now. help me, faux internet lawyer....

Yeah, Apple totally doesn't care about their consumers. Not at all.

Fix doesn't work

So I got the message of death, which I noticed when I had one unread message and the Messages app crashed. By the way, I'm on iPhone 6, iOS 8.1.2 (I know, I know). So I took a look at it on my Mac:
SOGXJVf.png

The sender had a name only, no number. I can't text them back. (Message isn't delivered.) Messaging myself doesn't help either. What could I do?

Right now, I turned off iCloud backup so I can restore my phone from last night's backup, but I rather wouldn't do something like that if it is at all avoidable.

Solution Message app crash

I found a solution that worked for me.

My Message app crashed every time. Eventually I received so many text that the "problem Thread" was not visible when app opened, but as soon as I scrolled down it crashed when it became visible again.

My Solution:
-Make sure that messages are included in spotlight search.
-Go to spotlight and search for one of the characters that this thread include f ex "Power" or "冗"
the message turned turned up, and when I pressed it, it took me in to the actual message.
-press the thread for a few seconds
-chose "more..."
-delete

Hope fully it is also gone for you:)

Apple Watch infinite reboot loop

After getting bad message via Viber, my apple watch (v1.0.1) went to an infinite reboot loop. I could only hold both buttons for ~10 seconds to turn it off. Nothing helped, even disabling Bluetooth @iPhone.
So to fix the issue, I had to unpair the watch from iPhone and pair it back.

**** you MR and all the other websites for publishing the actual message. All the stupid ****ing beggar fandroids have been spamming this **** for a laugh. Not caring whether their cheap thrill is making someone's business suffer and mAking then lose money. ****ing bastard fandroids.

Has anyone tried opening this on an Apple Watch yet? I'm curious if it would crash that as well.

Yes it does. I got the message about 24 hours ago, I was able to read it on my watch, but it locked up so I grabbed my phone and messages crashed on the phone and my watch dropped to the boot screen

Send it to all the people who never stop messaging you - it'll give you a break from the incessant messages, until they work out how to turn iMessage back on... or until you do it for them, by sending a "reset" message :D

Useful bug! Saves your sanity.

Message app keeps crashing when trying to open the app on iPad

Message app keeps crashing when trying to open the app on iPad. And iPhone I can get into the app but when I try to scroll down the messages. It crashes. It has nothing to do with funny message thing. Anyone has the same issue?

I changed all the settings shown in this thread and none of them worked. What did finally work was even simpler. Turn off iMessage and then have Siri send you a message. Worked fine after that. I had banners on and preview on and that still worked.

I sent this to my daughter to test it and it also prevented my message app from opening after I sent it to her from my iPhone. So I had two phones to fix. Same fix worked in both.

It will work until someone sends you the text again.

Turning off banners and previews doesn't fix an already effected phone. It keeps you from getting effected, or re-effected, in the first place.

This. Can't we let apple patch this before we show everyone the specific text?

Does anyone know how to fix it when someone sent the message and now their phone won't let you into messages now, my stupid bf sent me it as a joke...luckily I knew how to get it back but now he can't get onto his messages and he's got a few from his mum he needs to read. Thanks xx

Here's what worked for me....

Got the message on Tuesday and been trying all the fixes in this forum multiple times and two symptoms continually to occur:

1. I wasn't able to open messages icon - white screen and quick flash to the desktop.
2. Performing a backup/restore in iTunes kept crashing saying - iPhone disconnected. It also caused issues in Ibackupbot.

What fixed it:
1. Copy any existing iPhone backups to another directory. Completely empty/clear the directory that stores the default iTunes backups
2. Do/attempt a full backup of the phone.
3. Download Ibackupbot - didn't have to buy prem version.
4. In the top left pane you have one item (mine says Johnny Rocket's Iphone - May 29,2015) make sure that it is highlighted and ( You should be able to see a picture of your phone on the right side now).
5. Click on messages in the list below the picture of the phone.
6. I sorted by date and deleted all messages from the current date all the way to a day before i got the offending sms message. right click and "delete selected items" (this process took me a couple times, as the program would randomly shut down but eventually i got it to delete the messages i wanted.

Next:
7. Expand your iPhone backup in the list on the left and click System files under the root of your device backup.
8. Then MediaDomain
9. Click Library, then SMS.
10. Keep both folders "Parts" & "Attachments" BUT delete everything inside both those folders.
11. close the application. To make sure everything i wanted gone was gone, i re-opened the app "ibackupbot" and double checked. Closed that app after the check.
12. Put the iPhone into recovery mode...don't just turn the phone off without putting into recovery mode (look that up if you don't know how to do it....super easy.) After it comes up and iTunes recognizes it's in recovery mode it's going to ask you 2-3 questions.
13. First option i took was "restore" NOT update.
14. Next question says restore and update. Yes
15. After it loads the OS, in iTunes it asked for iCloud verification and then if i wanted to setup a new phone or restore from backup. I chose restore from backup.

520 apps and all my data with the rest of my text messages in 2 hours....done. I can use messages again without it closing on me and i'm able to scroll up through the text messages without any issues :)

They're testing the patch before releasing it. If they introduce 50 worse bugs, you'd be the first to whine about it.
