Hello All,

before jumping to conclusion..just hear me out. I always wanted an Iphone. I was always using Mid range android(like Oneplus). Finally i got a chance and bought my first apple device. Plan was to get iphone first and later get macbook pro(so that i can enjoy continuity and other integration stuff).

I bought my Iphone 8 Plus (64GB Grey) on first day and it is my daily driver. I am not a gamer. I use my phone for lot of reading and chat. Twitter/Reddit/Telegram/Whatsapp/LinkedIn and some financial apps are the prime apps i use.

Coming to the point, i am not at all happy/comfortable with my new device. In the last three months,I always felt my android device would do much better job. it was not comfortable in those initial days becoz of new OS, i thought i will give it some time. But finally i give up and going back to my android. Below are the main points/issues which forced me to take this decision.

  • Calculator - WTF? we are in Tesla Autonomous car times, stiil bugs in calculator? insane. I had to use my wife's phone to do some basic calculation. Just try playing with calculator and you will understand. another thing,i was surprised there is no history in calculator.
  • Notification - Notifications are a mess. you can not mute notifications from groups(specifically in whatsapp - like new message number in app). I am part of almost 15 different groups.(work/family/funny). In android if you mute a group you wont get any notifications, but here in iOS it does not work like that. every time i had to go and open app to see if that notification is from important person or some group. I am missing lot many msgs because of that. It is not at all comfortable. may be its whatsapp issue specific to iOS but i dont know whom to blame or what to do.
  • Notifications - multiple msgs from same person should be merged. iOS shows all messages one by one in lock screen. you have to browse through all messages and its not easy to check messages from specific person. and View/Clear is two step process. Android has swipe left/right.
  • Phone app - why i can not reject a call? I have to wait for the call to end if i dont want to take a call? In work places its really frustrating. stupid design.
  • Camera - Low light/Dark places photography is useless
  • App updates - there is always a delay in app updates. Like gmail,it takes couple of seconds(more than that sometimes) before showing new mail.(No internet issues. I checked with other friend whos iphone 7 and he says its common). Some other apps like seek/linkedin wont update at all sometimes. same..whom should i blame?
  • Browser and app link - external links always opened in safari. even tough you have app installed. example - a twitter/reddit link from chrome browser should open in app and not in safari. i have to login again in browser to comment/like or to do anything.I am looking for a solution and my friend who is iphone user(since beginning)could not help.
  • Imessage - you need internet to send normal sms. struggled lot many times to send normal sms. may be a bug.
  • Heating and hanging issue - I always though "Iphone Just works". apparently that's not the case. i am having similar heating and hanging issues just like any other Android phone.
  • Notification LED - its awesome in android. now i realized how much i miss that notification LED(i dont think iOS have anything like that or i am missing something)
  • Disable/turning off wifi/bluetooth from control centers- it just disconnects it. it wont turn it off. you have to go to settings to turn off completely
  • App specific issues - I use telegram a lot, you can not save gifs or memes..dont say its not a major issue. when animojis are prime selling point of flagship phone, these things maters.
  • itunes connectivity in multiple computers.something i can live with
  • Siri is useless and stupid - it was judging my 4 yr old son(He asked 'Hey siri How are you' in his mumbling accent and it says "i hope you dont kiss your mother with same mouth"..i googled it and that response is for abusive questions. not only this, Siri is useless compared to other similar stuff.
  • Maps are not accurate - lot many glitches..may be because of unstable ios11
  • No gesture controls - those gestures were pretty handy in android, like unlock, torch, msg etc.
  • Keyboard is not useful for me - I type in my local language(which is not English) with most of my friends and family. we use English letters for our language words. when i was using android it saves your words and wont auto correct it. it improves with the time and usage. but iOS, it is not as good as android in fact it is pretty bad. may be it sounds like a minor issue, but it is "The major" problem for me.
I am pretty disappointed. it turns out Android is much more sophisticated and great in most of things...if they improve software updates and fragmentation..its great OS.

these are just my views. nothing against apple or anything. in fact i am sad that apple is not for me. I was pretty excited when i got my phone(check my other messages if you want). Now my wife enjoys my Iphone.:):):):apple:

Here are some things I know that might help:
  • Calculator: They fixed some of the bugs and if it its still inadequate for your needs you can get another one on the app store.
  • Phone: Press the power button to reject a call
  • External links: You can open links in the appropriate app, you have to hold on the link and choose the app you want to open it with, it remembers for next time.
  • iMessage: You shouldn't need wifi to send SMS
  • LED: iOS does let you use the camera flash as a notification LED, but it's not quite the same.
  • Maps: I recommend you download Google Maps if the built in one is inadequate.
  • Keyboard: You can download other keyboards from the App Store that might be better for your needs.
Hope that helps. It seems like you ran into a lot of unusual glitches. iOS and Android work a bit differently and you would have to adapt I suppose.

OP - a lot of what you wrote is due to not knowing the OS. If I may suggest reading the manual for iOS to learn it. Use the iPhone more then make a final decision. I've been using iOS since 2008 and look at the manual myself from time to time and re-learn what I've forgotten or something new I wasn't aware of.

Thanks for your reply.

-Calculator I can live with that.
-tried its working. My iPhone friend too don’t know abt it.
-external links - I tried that before posting. Sometimes it works and sometimes not.
-SMS. May be a glitch.
-LED still miss that.
-Maps-using google maps. But started using Apple maps with great expectations. Li’l disappointed.
-keyboard - tried some. But they are not good either.

Thanks again for your reply and will give some more time.

You need to do a better research on how to use iPhone. I highly recommend using iBooks and downloading the official iOS 11.2 iPhone guide to help with some, for others, you either need to learn on how to deal with it or just go back to Android if you find yourself that you cant deal with iPhone quirks.

My wife and I just came from android after years of them. This is our first experience with iOS and we are loving it. I agree with the OP on a lot of his issues, but I’m a lot more simple than most users. I work 60h a week and don’t have a busy social life anymore. My most important aspects of my phone are reddit, Spotify and iMessage with my wife and kids.

Android is like a base model car with thousands of dollars of mods to make it fast. The more things you add, the more issues you run into. iOS is like a Mercedes amg. You don’t need to add anything, it comes out of the box perfect. I’ve seen many people try to come to android from Apple, and most of them end up hating it and going back to Apple. The way a galaxy phone works compared to an iPhone is crazy different. I realized I don’t need 1,000,000 options and to be able to get new widgets and launchers. iOS works and is a lot more user friendly. It’s nice to put my phone down for 6 hours and come back to it only having lost 1-2%. My galaxy with always on display activated and bad signal could lose 3-5% per hour idle, just trying to keep a signal.

OP I feel your pain and I think android probably is better for you. If someone doesn’t like how their android phone works, there are always custom roms or ways around it. iOS is a lot more caged in, and you basically get what they give you. I saw you mention OnePlus, and I am wondering if you’re considering a 5T? It’s a hell of a phone.

This is a forum to discuss iPhones. Not everyone here is sucking at the teet of the great Apple.

Thanks for sensible reply.

My problem is same app work different ways in different OS’s. I don’t know the reason. Look at my issues, most of them are specific to individual apps. These same apps works in more ‘ sensible’ way in android.( I know sensible is subjective.. I had a long conversation with different users..and they appreciate some nice things in android. )

I would argue the opposite.
Having been android user (with a few nokias and bbs thrown into the mix) since day one of android I finally got my first iPhone (7 Plus) in July (just got a X two days ago).
I find that the iOS apps, compared to the same Android app, tend to be a lot more polished. Android, to me, when I pick up a android phone feels so hacked and pieced together (the sw, not the physical phone. For instance Samsung’s phones, the actual phones are nice) because, well, because Android is pieced together.
Anyway find which OS you’re comfortable with and go for it. That’s why we have choices.
[doublepost=1513061689][/doublepost]Regarding SMS, under Settings -> Messages make sure you have “Send as SMS” turned on.

Most of your issues are not issues; things like LED light everyone knows that iPhones don't have those, Maps and Siri are not the strongest Apple apps, calculator bug was fixed in 11.2, notifications have worked the same way for the past two years, google removed push from gmail years ago, hence the delay, iMessage has an option to send as text if no data is available (been there for years), app links always open default Apple apps with few minor exceptions. etc. Show me a cell phone camera with a useful dark/low light photography?

All I am saying that if you had done any research, you would had known most of these.

Whatsapp Group notifications can be disabled and individual notifications kept on.
Open WA>Settings>Notifications>Group Notifications, here, turn off Show Notifications and your life will be peaceful. Keep Message Notifications on top turned ON.

Normal sms's can be sent for sure. Check what is showing undersettings>messages>send and receive>Is your apple ID verified there?
Then you can be reached by imessage at ( I have my cell number and apple ID ticked)
Start new conversation from: ( I have my cell number ticked)
If your apple ID is unverified or somewhere there it is showing waiting for activation, that is the reason your sms's are not going through.

Agreed.

Majority of the reasons that stopped me from getting iPhone X is iOS-related. Having a fragile glass-back when I'm a "no protection" kinda guy didn't help either.

Apple is about compromise over choice. Compromises to make a profit.

You know why they removed headphone jack? Not to improve waterproofing or put a bigger battery which they didn't. It was to extract more money in their ecosystem with accessories. A $159 wireless accessory.

They took out Touch ID and forced X owners to use only one biometric security when Note8 and 5T have both. Compromise over choice.

Did we ask for a glass back and expensive repairs? It's the user's faults that it's priced over a grand?

It's almost like Apple runs their ecosystem like communism.

I still can't believe Control Center still doesn't have a location toggle or the fact it doesn't really turn them off and only disconnects them. My SwiftKey on iOS doesn't have numbers on top.

Some more issues I have with iOS -

Copy and paste is sensitive. I can't select certain parts of a paragraph. It selects the entire page!

No back button. When I want to go back to a previous tab in Safari, I have to scroll up first to see the tab. The tab isn't below unless I scroll up.

Why do I need to sync to iTunes to delete a photo on the computer for it to be deleted from a photo album on my iPhone?

How come in the Notes app, it numbers it automatically for me? But when I try to copy and paste the list, the numbers don't appear? I have to manually number it in this dialog box. I miss Android's Private Notepad.

Multimedia playback is simply inferior on iOS, no way around it unless I convert. I used to be a fan of VLC but its quality has gotten worse.

So many head scratching inconveniences with iOS when all I hear is it's simple and just works. I don't buy it. Android matured faster while iOS hasn't matured fast enough the last five years.

Listen, neither OSes are for everybody. No product is. Android isn't without its flaws. I can understand people who can't stand it. But you can also see why iOS isn't for everybody either. So many basic things it still can't do or requires an extra step.

I will still use both platforms although my mind is wandering again away from iOS and thinking of getting a Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact or Essential PH-1 but only if both reach about $300-$350.

Android = New York City. Dangerous urban life and eclectic.

iOS = Suburban gated community. Safer. But you feel a little trapped. Sometimes I would also compare to working in Disneyland. Not the happiest place in the world to work for.

Its great that there is a choice in Android, I respect your opinions though I disagree.

What do you mean “won’t work “ ??
You can’t open the Messages app or ??

“Won’t work” doesn’t tell us anything.

What happens when you type a message and try to send ?
What is so hard in that. SMS app is for sending sms. When I said it’s not working, it means I am unable to send sms. I get error message message not delivered.

Yes.. I did not do any research. But most of these are related to ‘ experience ‘ rather than specifications. How would I know if don’t use it. I am not bashing or against Apple. I am just saying it is not working for me.

That settings path, I tried already.Still I see unread msgs number in WhatsApp in home screen. My I’d is verified. Issue is it only happens sometimes not every time. And happens only when other phone is an iPhone.

Agreed.

Android = New York City. Dangerous urban life and eclectic.

iOS = Suburban gated community. Safer. But you feel a little trapped. Sometimes I would also compare to working in Disneyland. Not the happiest place in the world to work for.

New York city - if you want to get mugged, or robbed, deal with constant traffic, overpriced cost of living etc that is for you - meaning, I can't imagine paying the same (in many cases) for Android as for iPhone and get zero or close to no updates in a lot of cases, or apps that are inferior, or service (in case of a problem) where I need to wait 2 weeks for a phone, or user experience that is different between most phones (except pure stock google which even that is not the same between models), slowdowns after several months of usage etc.

Suburban gates community - if you care for your family and kids and want a piece and quiet for many years to come, limit the exposure to problems, that is for you - meaning - iOS offers stable and safe platform, same experience for many years (except the minor changes with X), provides excellent service and support, great resell value and integration with Apple ecosystem.

iPhone X is a fantastic device, but...it runs iOS :( The iPhone X would be the phone of the decade if it ran stock Android 8.1

If you've been an Android user for years, going to an iOS device will be jarring, and extremely frustrating. Just the way it operates and works, some things feel so ancient, and you'll think to yourself, why hasn't Apple changed this, or that already.

- Notifications in iOS is pure garbage, and shocking Apple hasn't revised the whole notification system already.

- Phone app dialer feels like a decade old in how it operates. Laundry list of things that need major updating.

- Default settings, come in Apple, let us chose which browser or maps app we want as default.

- Too many things to list here why iOS 11 still feels like a OS from five years ago.

Here's a great video; ( I highly recommend spending the time to watch the entire review, really good video )

At the risk of sounding like a little kid, I have to say I can’t unsee the fact that the guy has a notch hairline almost like the guy in the recent Samsung commercial! It is a good video. Thanks for sharing.

For the tab complaint, you just tap the bottom of the page and it pops up, to highlight certain words, you just touch and hold for a half a second and it highlights the word and from there you can drag it further to highlight more text.

Some complaints I definitely agree with, the headphone jack removal is a big one for me as well, the multimedia playback as well is something I enjoy having an android tablet for. But for me I would rather just have a cheaper android tablet for the few things and have the more fluid phone experience of an iPhone.

And yes I have dipped into android more than once, latest was a note 8, still back to an iPhone.
